I read a thread on this a while ago (maybe a month) and everyone said hell no... except the people who had used them, and from what i recall no one had had issues and some turbo brains were quite impressed, the only comment on the negative was something about a bit not included which could be scavenged to fit.
do a search on here evski and see if you can find it.
as for turbo rebuilds one place i asked offered to do it for a cheap $1800 +... um... no thanks.
ive heard a number of people say rebuild kits through a ct is about 450 carry in carry out.
just make sure your turbo you buy doesnt have damaged fins in the impellors.
Personally I would go a rebuilt genuine, but wouldnt necissarily overlook the new jobbies from china... i mean the states.
I have heard of wreckers selling complete ct set ups for around 5-600 mark might be worth some yellow pages time.

When you have a top speed of 120, with a dirty 2.8 turbo diesel (which i dont class as powerful nor the torque/power range to get you to those mentioned speeds without winding it up for km's, VS a v6/v8 which in most cases will take you as fast as your gearing will take you, commonsense tells me if you have the power your going to use it on occasion causing problematic situations.....
It wasn't a comment about a v6 taking more to stop at "x" speed and the diesel turbo to stop in a short distance. It was a comment about capable speeds, acceleration etc etc.
And in my experience, 4x4s dont handle nor brake like a normal car, even upgraded brakes on a hilux still dont perform like a normal car when you take, diff roll and a million differences between them and a car, hence my "thats what i think hes getting at and IMO" comment.

if you have any common sense it'd be the vehicle dynamics, and not the power/torque of the motor that limits your top speed.
yeah, i've used the extra power on tap... when it's needed to get out the way of a problem, or offroad when the slug of a diesel would have just ghasped and died...
Man my Hilux will put your brain through your nose when I stomp on the brakes, pulls up dead straight in no time from ballistic speeds and it even handles really well too.
They can be set up to go, handle and stop oh yeah and do some neat 4wheeling as well.

It's all up to the driver to use the power available I drive the same I did with my slow as 1hz that I do with my V8 as 1. the speed limit round here is 110 and 2. I know the limitations of the 2380KG car with its high centre of gravity.
I personally wouldn't bother with a 2.8 and strapping a turbo to it. Once a slug always as a slug unless you can get the parts really really cheap to do it up. I'd go with an efi petrol V6 preferably v8 for the price difference of conversion and enjoy the power and slight use of extra juice (probably not that much more as the 2.8's aren't that efficient are they for what they put out?) Could probably pick up a real cheap conversion 2nd hand or even a whole car converted really cheap and put the good bits in your rig.

hey i got a 94 lux with a v6 n a dyna box.. now i love my lux but i casn speak from many many hours spent down at my work shop that theirs alot of work involved.
to solve the over heating problems it took a aussie dessert cooler radiator n 3 thermos's a 16inch on back n 2 9inch on the front..
so as much as i love the power n the torque n low low speeds in low first up bush
it takes 3 times the amount of time u think n at least twice the cash
would i do it again thoug HELL YES
I've been thinking about turbo to but had some people tell me that the motor wouldn't Handel the extra power and might cause costly repairs so I got a bi scared off. Could be worth considering. If ya drive it right turbo should increase milage slightly too. I would definitly go the turbo over enigne swap.
