Some turbos
Some turbos
I have it in the back of my mind to fit a turbo to the old beast, high mount and more of a caravan turbo than a fire breathing one.
I came across these 5 and made a $300 impulse purchase sight unseen, none look visibly ruined.
So these are what i have I understand they are all from Nissans one is supposed to be ball bearing...how do i tell?
All have a small plaque with minature writing on them...how does one know what they have from that??
cheers

grab the other ball bearing one, it looks like it's off a silvia/200sx.
Post up here what is on it's plaque to help us find out what model it is but turbos that size are usually great for patrols. As in most 200sx turbos are either T25 or T28 BB.
Really the best thing would be to take them to someone who knows turbos and ask them as it's kind of hard to do from a picture.
also on the two housings there should be an AR ratio like .70 or something, check that and add it to the details.

Thanks LUX for that kind offer, but not necessary, have spent something like 15 hours of my life on the net and have pretty much worked them out, the ZDs not being BB is new information and sad news as there is a cast looking journal that runs full width along the shaft...are you definite?LUX90 wrote:the 724639-2 is a standard ZD30 turbo, It is VNT and not ball bearing.
One of the turbos you have there is a ZD30 Navara turbo.
The other two look to be off SR20s, and may be one of them is the ball bearing one.
If you PM me the part numbers I will check what they are for you.
If so it's a bit of a shame not being able to identify BB from bush turbo's this way, think they are in pretty good condition too.
Yes the other two are sr20 units one is the old disco potato type and the other one near the same but has the large 53mm comp wheel.
cheers

Cheers for that Anzac, i think i will go with one of the sr20 units from like you say a Silvia or GTIR or whatever in the 90s, to the best of my knowledge so far it's the same turbo as the modern GT2554R but I don't think at this stage it is a BB turbo.

I am 100% certain that the two ZD patrol ones are not ball bearing. I have pulled a few apart before and none have been ball bearing. Nothing I can find on the net states they are ball bearing.
The bearing you can see looking up the oil drain is because in those turbos they have a single journal bearing supporting the whole shaft.
A GTiR pulsar one would not be suitable as they have the 0.86 turbine housing and won't spool well on a TD42.
The offer is there if you want to work out which of the two SR20 units may be ball bearing. I will only need the part numbers off the turbo. One looks to just be a std SR20 journal bearing turbo. The other I would need some more info to identify.

OK thanks LUX,
The 2 ZDs .53/64 :

and the .80/.64 is
AE 0237J

The 50F00 is the one I have my eye on.
Also have a HT12-19b, 5319 Hitatchi...
Wondering also what the Hitachi and the 2 ZD turbos are good for now? Are they now just throw aways?
cheers

Unfortunately it looks like none of these turbos are Ball bearing I am sorry. The numbers I get them to identify as are:
V6 0198J
14411-54C00
7465997-1
Is a Journal bearing T28. With the 0.86 rear housing I do not think it would be successful on your TD42.
and the .80/.64 is
AE 0237J
14411-50F00
466113-3A
Is a journal bearing T25. Would come on boost really early, but also run out of air really early as well.
DF 0768J
14411-vc100
705954-9
Early ZD30 Patrol turbo, Variable vane turbo and basically a throw away turbo.
HE 2276J
14411-2x900
724639-2
Later ZD30 Patrol turbo, VNT as well and also throw away. Both these ones wont really suit your application due to the VNT.( They are vacum controlled)
The HT 12 won't suit your Patrol either unfortunately.
The two Patrol ones may sell for 100ish on Ebay, but they are always on there and are always cheap.
The Navara one may be easy to sell if it is in reasonable condition.
The other two I would put on Ebay and try your luck, but have seen them go for as little as $40 at times.
Sorry I can not give you any good news that will help your project more.

Might just do that this week, hope the reconditioning quote doesn't see me deciding to spend just $300 more on a brand new one!ledgend80 wrote:mate take it to a turbo shop like rall hall turbochargers in cairns

Cheers Lux for your time and interest, surprised at just how expendable these turbos can be. To be sure some very good extra information there.
I have heard that the T28 (I thought it was another T25) is actually the disco potato early style and of the large turbine option, too much high rev poke for me
I think the T25 might suit me, I do want very early spooling and do not need great gains in HP or to pull more than 3k, will see what the turbo rebuilders think it's worth to bring back to known reliable.
cheers, thanks again.

If you search the Garrett and after market parts catalogues with these numbers you will find much info.
Don't discount using the VNT turbo - if you change the vacuum actuator to a boost pressure actuator you could get it to work well enough and have a broader useful rpm range than waste gate turbos. I have a Garrett VNT turbo that uses a boost pressure actuator.
Edit: When I looked up the 2 VNT turbos, they are both GT2052V (20 is Garrett's designation for size of turbine (2 sizes down from 25) and 52 is diameter of the compressor impeller in mm - smaller than I would put on a 2.5 litre diesel let alone a 3.0 or 4.2 litre.
John
Cheers for that, couldn't get the garrett search engine to pull anything up on those numbers, might have been trying in the wrong place somehow.
No matter, I know enough about them for now.

Turbos
Mate, have you still got the zd30 turbos,? Im having all sorts of dramas with my zd30 and going thru a process of elimination which gets expensive!! I dont want to buy a new turbo if mines alright and you cant get service exchange. Its my work bus and I cant have it off the road.
I m looking for a s/hand one so I can see what the go is if you were keen to offload one?
Cheers
