Maxxis Bighorn, Buckshot or Simex Centipede MT
I'm looking for a new set of tyres in the next few weeks, but i'm not sure what to get. I want some capable offroad tyres, but unfortunately spend most of my time driving on the blacktop (about 1000km per fortnight). I am looking for 31x10.5r15. In the past I have had Cooper ST and STT (too expensive for me at about $270 or $300 each), I love the MTR as I have the older ones on my Suzuki Sierra (but the new one is way to expensive for me at $300+). It is for a 1990 Mitsubishi Pajero TD, which is over 500kg lighter than your Landcruiser or Patrol, weighing 1600kg. My Paj is not an extreme offroader (but I do like the difficult stuff), but more of an outback tourer.
Recently I have been looking at Maxxis Buckshots ($175 each) and Bighorns ($195 each), but have also looked into the Simex Centipede MT ($185 each), not the ET or JT, just the mud tyre.
I've heard lots of good reviews about Maxxis Buckshot and Bighorn, both being excellent offroad (maybe the Bighorn being ever so slightly better in the rough stuff due to side lugs). What about onroad? I want a tyre that is going to last a while (i'm a careful driver, not a hoon) coz I don't want to replace them every year.

and got quoted some good prices which are more or less the same as the Maxxis tyres. I know in the competition scene, Simex is tried and proven, but what about these tyres? they handle well especially in the wet (i know this from the last week of torrential downpour we have had haha) but they are rather loud although surprisingly smooth. dont seem to have worn very much at all and he drives to and from work every day sometimes 20 Ks sometimes 100Ks each way. and i know you didnt ask but they really are awesome off road to. not trying to sell them or anything i dont drive on them myself but out of those 3 thats what i would go personally.

Yes you and every other person has said Bighorn! I have already heard that they are awesome offroad so that's not an issue. I'm just interested in the life I may get from these tyres. If your brother is happy with there rate of wear on a 2300kg 60 series, then i'm sure that they will do even better on my 1600kg Pajero.

i have the buckshots and have been very happy with them, once or twice i wanted for side lugs though.
on road they were fine - quieter than i expected and smoother and grippier than i thought they would be in the wet.
I only used them as play tyres but did a few 500km runs in them to get to the snow etc and was very happy with them.
I would run them again. but cant comment on longevity as i havent done many k's in the lux on those tyres.

Hey, I've had buckshots before, crap tyre, and wouldn't waste my money (or yours) I'm runnin Claws ATM....but they won't last long on road, maybe get 25-30 thou, I'd say get some 'horns! More open tread than the buckshots and sidebiters too. I feel the buckshots are too closed tread pattern and they clog very easily in the mud, not a bad tyre in the rocks, but its still not a TSL or a Claw....

Well after all this great feedback I think that I may go down tomorrow and see if I can organise some for my Paj! Bighorns that is!

i have 33s big horns on my 75, and they are good on everything i have thrown them at yet, and they are wearing quite well i belive, have done maybe about 10,000 ks or more on them so far, no complaints, i dont think they are loud, but then again my car sounds like a kettle from gaps in the door jamb, my exhaust ends at the back of my cab and drones, and my cd player is amped and usually cranked up, so either my hearing is damaged, or the tyres arent that loud lol...... ( i think the tyres arent that loud)

have just sold my 50% 32" bighorns today to a mate and put some 32" simex centrepedes i had also 50% on for now and WOW what a shyt tyre
noisy on road,steers crap,brakes wierd,vibrates etc.Im sure they are awesome in mud but are crap in granite sand and mates with them hate them on rock too,they shouldnt be daily driven lol.My bighorns were on for about 23000ks and still at 50% tread but with a few cuts cos i never used to air down for the bush and was unlocked.Then if i did air down i wouldnt pump em back up for weeks so started wearing the edges of the tyres cornering on road.
So....(sorry for the book) my experience of bighorns are good and ill be ordering a new set tomorrow just bigger.They are quiet on road,good on rock and great value for money.Friends are also happy with buckshots so everyone will have a different opinion.

Another vote for Bighorns, I will be getting a set in 285s for on my standard gu rims for touring duties.

Good Luck to anyone wanting to get bighorns in a 31" iv'e been chasing some to but everyone that i speek to quotes about the $180 mark but say that it will be a few months untill the next shipment comes in as there are none in Aus at the moment. You might be lucky enough to find someone that has them in stock other than that its not gonna happen.
i had big horns and they were fantastic and i think i did about 45 000-50 000 km on them and they were still leagle (i think )when i sold them and they were 33's on an 80 series cruiser and i think i took a step backwards when i got some Mickey Thompson MTZ's

Well I finally put a deposit down on 4x 31" Bighorns @ $195 each. Every person that I have spoken to (both on this forum and other places) has said Bighorn. I didn't buy 5 Bighorns because I want to see how they go first, for the initial 10,000km or so. I know i'll like them and buy a 5th one for the spare... I will probably be getting them fitted in the next 2 or so days. Lots of people are saying that i'll get about 50,000km from them, which to me is a bit disappointing, but there is no harm in trying to proling their life... I know, i'm probably wishful thinking I'm looking forward to getting them and testing them out!
