Exhaust for 80 series
I've got a 1HZ that needs a new exhaust.
I was just wondering what others have got and what seems to work well in terms of extra power etc.
I was thinking of a 2.5" from the manifold, getting rid of the front resonator, hi flow rear muffler and 2.5" out.
Exhaust shops so far only want to sell bolt on kits with extractors and I'm not spending $950.

Yep - go teh 2.5" from flexi back use only small muffler not standard size. Get pump tickled and HELLO _ that where the ponies were hiding!
Mine done not long back - $250 all up - even drove it for 2 weeks without the muffler.. neighbours hated it - I liked the top end but couldn't drive at 100km/h... only 80 or 120 - resonance was a biatch...

If you need to replace the flex joint, pay a little extra and get a good one that will stop vibs going to the rest of the exhaust/chassis.
The front resonator is straight through, no restriction, so if its still ok, leave it and concentrate on the rear restrictional tank muffler. A guy i know put a pressure gauge on his exhaust and was getting up to 7 psi at full revs backpressure from that sucker (on a t/d) Another straight through there will not only give less backpressure, but smaller diameter will give you ground clearance too, especially if it is a nice flat one.
Lastly, pull the ass end off the car and put another on that isnt squashed as it goes over the chassis. I have a 2.5 inch in there no problems.(no body lift)

I put a new exhaust on my 1HZ 80 series, it is fully mandrel bent with just one straight through resonator, picked up about 40kW and fuel economy has improved too. the downside is the exhaust kit cost $2500 and the exhaust manifold has a strange, two-snail shaped lump in the middle of it.
the factory flex joint is pretty good, if yours is still ok, re-use it.

What's the point of the front resonator anyway?
It is fine on my truck (I've only killed the rear muffler) but I assumed it would be restricting the flow in some way as well.
Is this incorrect?
Would I get the same power increase from just puting a new rear muffler and piping from the resonator back?

Sounds like the next exhaust for my 80 as well...
Personally - go 2.5" from the flex back - use a smaller muffler as the big one's are back pressure keen.
Also - when the exhaust crosses the rear cross member - don't get it sent where the stocky goes - just have it dump next to the spare tyre.. less turns in the pipe = more go! Works for mine - people ask whether mine is turbo'd or not (just stock! with pump opened a wee tad..) and I say I'm still poor.

Muffler
I've just replaced the muffler on mine, using a straight through truck unit that sits about level with the chassis rails. It's cut into the original system, and given me back low end torque $140 fitted at Woden exhaust (Canberra). No noisier than what before.
