take out the sender and get a multimeter set to resistance (ohms).

measure the resistance at the terminals with the float at one end and then move the float along its full range of movement and the resistance shoulsd steadily change all the way. if it doesnt then the sender isnt sending accurate info.

if this is the case often the contact is poor or no longer contacting, this can be solved by cleaning the contact points and ensureing they are in contact.

pull the wire off the tank and earth to the body and see if the needle rises. If it does work then pull the tank out, and make sure the float touch's all the way up :D
This is where it's at...

thats not so easy. my tank is fairly stuck need to oil the bolts and try and get the filler pipe off the tank. last time i tried it wouldnt budge.
is there anyway to test the sender at the gauge cluster by readin the ohms. does anyone know what the resistance is meant to be at full tank compared to empty tank and so on.

found it

F = 110 ohms
E = 3 ohms
1/2 = 32.5 ohms
