To the people with Gen 3 GQs!

Post by UNJUST »

Hey Guys

Researching the idea if i should go v8 or not

Main questions are:

*What Fuel economy are you getting out of your trucks that are equipped with Gen 3s/ls1/ls2??, and what specs are your trucks running to get these figures What tyre sizes are you running?, Ute, SWB or LWB? Power levels? Manual or Auto?

*Have you been happy with the conversion?

*from what ive read dellows bell housing is best?

*Do i have to run a custom flywheel/clutch?

*was thinking that maybe i could get a complete commodore wreck maybe?

*Maybe even run an auto?

My Trusty old TD42 has let me down and with 400k on the clock and just weighing up my options if i should rebuild or replace, havent had my Maverick a long time but really enjoyed the Turbo Diesel thing but power is down (80kw at the treads) a bit and well its pretty easy to screw power out of the Gen 3s.

Im thinking finacially there wont be much difference in rebuilding the TD42 to swapping to Gen 3 for me, now before you all comment im confident enough to do all the conversion at home and have access to a dyno. Was wanting to power up the TD42 so factor that into the conversion costs

Just not sure which way to go

Cheers Jarrod

do it, it was the best thing i ever did. i ran the commodore auto. got about 5-6 km/l fuel economy. i would think you would easaly do the conversion for less then a hotted up td42 and would make better power out of a stock motor, spend a few dollars on the gen3 and :D

i priced up a gen 3 conversion and most of the cost is in the actual adaptors and stuff u have to buy to fit it. was around $5k if i remeber for all the conversion parts then u would need a motor and fit it new exhaust, fuel tank will need to be changed, it just keeps adding up. if going auto the factory auto holden auto's 4l60 and 4l65 are very weak boxes and i would prob expect to have to build it to handle the power and bigger tyres before going in or budget for it within a year or 2. they blow all the time in even standard bolt on power commo's let alone ones with cams and that.

could promise u would rebuild the td42 and power it up cheaper and it would be more reliable.

also have to factor in all engineers costs.

a lot of ppl go into a conversion thinking it will be cheap and come out of it a long way over budget just comes down to how much u really want to spend.

goodluck with the decision.

i have an earlier stroker chev in my gq on straight gas and i reckon it was cheaper for me to build a complete motor do the conversion get all custom 4 into 1's and everything built for it than getting close to doing a gen3 conversion. granted i went a little overboard on the motor but i kno it will last a lot longer than a gen3.

If doing all work yourself, and using a dellows adpater, instead of buying all the overpriced marks adpaters parts, you can do it for around $7000 - $8000 all up.
