Anthony, last time i checked TR spares in Adelaide were selling 4.3 stroker kits for $2750, that is a complete kit - pistons ,rings , bearings , crank , rods. Just rebore your block fit a new cam and timing gear , chain and away you go.
AnthonyP wrote:hmmmm more power isnt the main reason i was looking to change the engine, I just read so much good shit about these engines, and how efficient they are etc etc.

K landy man say I take the stroke path (good cause I can rebuild my ZF and keep just about everything) how much are the complete stroker kits (if there is any) and to what stroked amounts can I get ? ? ? All pricing can be approximates.

I dont know much about opening up an engine to install the kits and cams n shit like that, if its reletively easy then that would put it on top of the list.

See i have to take my ZF out so I figured while I do one thing I may aswell think about doing the rest.
I think no matter what i do its gonna be good but I was also thinkin the toyota V8 would be alot more efficient in the end (power/fuel/reliability wise) also it would involve removing half the rover electrics a very good thing considering an installed an tuned haltech will cost me over 2grand.

There is just toooo much stuff, I want my V8 to feel like a V8  not just sound like one.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

funny you mention TR spares i was just on there site

I like the 4.9L kit more
You mention reboring the block... is this a requirement for the stroker kits? Also how will this work with the standard rover ECU.

I am gonna take my ZF out hopefully this weekend (depending on drinkin sessions :) ) get it overhauled with jag parts and then sulk for awile :D

Anthony,

Get the ZF reco'd, if you decide to loose it lster i'll take it off your hands.

The 4.0l will fit as i have been looking at this since Sandy (aus 4wd) did the ptrool. Can get the bell housing made too, but as paul said don't expect any change from 10k.

You have alot to deal with, it's a later model engine so you have to meet EPA omission laws, wiring, cooling, engineering and later a diff change to cope with the power.

Fix the ZF be happy for a while and maybe do it later. I will be doing mine myself and dont expect much change out of 6k and my best mate is an auto-eng, i live with a mech and know a good auto elec. The little parts run the bill way up.

My 2 cents

You could save a heap by taking the gbox out for the reco I reckon that would save you $500 in labor

I am taking it out and to Brad (BJ will know him, he is the guy with that big mud running sizuki up near brisbane).

I am also looking at replcing the whole unit as I can get some Zfs for cheap but just dont know what condition, so there is a risk involved. Either way its coming out and goin to Brad atm.

Engine work is irrelivent atm as I couldnt give a stuff anymore :D
Sorry auto_eng at the moment the plans are completely halted :)

Still say fix the auto and drive the engine til it dies. it may be gutless, but perservere and get your moneys worth for what you paid for it.

Stroker or the 4.6 cross-bolted block option is still the best. As landy-man said, no engeneers or all that red tape with conversuions are involved.

Could also grab a 4 bolt web block 4L and do that up.. From the New disco's... or stroke the 3.5 to over 4.6..... just add crank and rods....

Legal, everything fits, spend your $5K and have Sleeper appeal - as NOTHING will keep up...

I dunno fella - you face a conundrum.... I know how that feels... :D

buy a kit from either TR Spares or where ever and fit it yourself with a little help from your mechanic mate. You will not only learn a great deal, but save heaps of money. I have a complete V8 rebuild manual in pdf.
if you don't want to buy a Haynes, that is if you do not already own one.

Pull the auto out yourself, buy the parts needed to rebuild...shop around for Jag stuff, etc....pay someone for just their labour to rebuild....

I reckon you would cover it all for $5K.....

the price i got for the 4.8 was from TR spares.

Its includes the 4.8stoker kit and 3.9 original block short block, cam, lifters, all assembled.

I asked about the cost of the item not assembled an they said minus $300 i though stuff it they may aswell do it  but I aint ready to spend al that cash just yet, I think the better option will be the ofset wheels and flares and hopefully a maxidrive for the rear.

Then its back to square one saving for the engine upgrade
It was fun while it lasted :D

I already have a haynes manual ;) I gonna need it to figure out how to do my auto
