My Zook is afraid of the water

Hi all I have a problem thats leaving me scratching my head :crazyeyes:

i have a 89 sierra with 31's have extended shackles and bodylift



My zook used to have no problems with a little water but recently it has started getting fussy about getting wet if i head into anything anywhere near the top of my tyres ( barely touching the engine bay) it quickly looses power and dies



even when i enter the water very slowly to minimize splashing on the motor it dies



after winching out and a little spray of crc on ignition leads and dizzy cap it starts spits lots of water out the exhaust coughs and splutters a bit then runs fine



i have recently had a 2 inch straight through exhaust put on it seems that its when the exhaust goes under it dies i wondered if because of the larger diameter not enough pressure to keep water out?

but upon doing some homework on the matter i found lots to say that shouldn't be the case

the engine does appear to be getting a fair bit of water on it i wonder if some sheet steel in a bash plate fashion would deflect the water and help the problem



anyways just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar problem and has found a solution
or anyone has any advice or idears on making my zook more water happy

I put a snorkel on mine close to a year ago.

Later i developed some issues, where itd lose lots of power when in water etc.
I found that some of the connections (dizzy/lead and lead/plug) were corroded a little bit.
I replaced the dizzy (installed a dizzy breather and sealed the base). I ensured there was sufficient contact in connections, and applied dielectric grease to keep the water out of the connections.
Haven't had any issues since.

Mine used to hate water and drop a cylinder or two. I replaced the dizzy cap, rotor, and put quality leads and beefier coil on and now it doesn't have a problem with water up near the door handles.

do you still have a mechanical fan? they tend to spray water around, also check for a vacuum leak.

Yeh thats the biggest problem i had with water. The mechanical fan would hydraulic in the water and you would just lose all engine power. Maybe upgrade to a Vitara clutch fan or even an electric thermofan.

New plug leads and dizzy cap.
The boots get old and brittle and let water in, a set of Bosch leads with the moulded boots (and a bit od di electric grease .. water resistant rubber friendly non conductive grease .. looks like clear silicone but never dries out)

how do you dudes deal with water getting in from the fuel filler neck?

new cap?
tampons in the neck?

Ive never heard of it being a problem to be honest. You must be sitting underwater for quite a few hours with a buggered cap for anything significant to seep in.

Never been an issue for me .. but I always had a good (factroy suzuki) cap.

my tank breather has a inline filter and i have a good seal on the cap, seems to
work well and because fuel costs $2.50 a liter here i do what i can to look after it. :lol:

might have to try a new cap...the seal on mine was quite perished

I got about 2 litres of water in there while doing a crossing the other day...admittedly the fuel filler was underwater for a good five minutes while trying to climb out

bit of metho in the tank helps with water :)

i just bought new dizzy cap, rotor, leads and plugs will fit and see if that helps

my fan is on all the time so maybe that's the reason lots of water is thrown over the motor even when i enter water holes slowly

also bought some heatproof self amalgamating tape will seal up all leads and anything else i can under the bonnet

I put a ryco marine fuel filter in the engine bay, and removed the stock filter which seemed to vibrate apart.

filter element is $10 to replace and has a water seperator with glass bowl to inspect/drain etc.

Track down some di-electric grease .. it is waterproof, and will reseal if you pul things apart and put em back together again.
