Just wondering who was running a manual gearbox...
- If you were, was it because you prefer it?
- Or, would you run an auto if you could?
- What ratios is the manual box?
- T-case ratio?
- Diff ratio?
- Have you run an auto in the past for comparison?
Working some stuff out for my jeep and haven't driven anything but an auto in anything really serious.
Manual in my jeep is a lot more fun, but it still annoys me on the trails so wondering how that translates into serious comp stuff.
Any input appreciated.

Who was running a manual at Tuff Truck?

how much work have you done to your auto???
as far as i was aware, with all the fruit and auto was ment to be better than a manual in almost every depeartment, no having to dump the clutch, jsut slowly rev up, no clutch slipping to take or really gently,
but you supposedly have to do a fair bit of work with the autos, larger cooler(not the one in the radiator) with its own thermo fan, manual lock up( switch that locks up your tourque converter) , some work on the auto(maybe a shift kit or just strengthaning the bits that are known to fail) and transfer gears so that when your going down hill you can have the engine breaking, (same reason for the tourque converter lock up)
oh, and i am also a manual driver( not in tuff truck..... yet) but i understand the benifits of going auto, pinpoint wheel placement, less strain on the rest of the drive train, no lul when you do change gears off road, but most of us know that you dont change gears all that often on the tracks, only getting to them

The black zook of the gympie boys that came third was a manual .
I drove TT this year with an auto and being my first event and first vehicle with an auto, i wouldn't personally go back to a manual for that sort of work just makes life easier and one less thing to worry about when in the rough stuff , also makes crawling or slowly loading up ledges etc a lot more predictable .
As for my auto it is a T700R out of a v6 commodore and we just put a rebuild kit through it , ran a deep pan sump and seperate cooler with thermo fan - had no problems all weekend with this setup .

different strokes for different fokes
auto is so much easier to drive and a little bit quicker to get reverse if you need to in a hurry
but that is about the only advantage in my opinion
manual's are lighter
dont have to worry about oil levels to get drive
dont have to worry about heat
the manual will launch 100 times better
dont need to go to neutral-reverse to use disconnects
and i also reckon it is easier on parts mainly just big ledges were u get on it and get kicked back off you can stand on the clutch and instantly loose drive were the auto will still be driving landing, breaking parts
auto is so much easier to drive and a little bit quicker to get reverse if you need to in a hurry
but that is about the only advantage in my opinion

From what I have seen/driven/naved if you have a well setup auto with aloto power and $ to do it its better than a self cog swaper and 3rd pedal.l. But a good driver can do just at much with a strong box and a clutch plate they are willing to change as offten at the brake pads. Just my 2bobs worth.
