What turbo for a 2H ????
Hey guys, I wanting to know what turbo will be suitable for my 2H ??
ie: Will a t3 be ok and what specs should i be looking for ( what A/R AND WHAT TRIM)
How does the specs affect the turbo performance?

2h motors unfortunately have low exhaust flow but large combustion chambers which makes it notoriously difficult to choose a turbo for, you need one that spools easily on low exhaust flow (like a small turbo would) and one that can keep up the boost in large pots at 3500 rpm (like a larger turbo would). if u go a large turbo, you wont get boost up properly till bout 2500rpm, if you go a small turbo you will run out of puff at about the same.
i have a 2h and was recomended to use a ball bearing garett gt25, which is supposed to spool easily and be big enough to run high boost at high revs. toyota ct26 turbos are too large and ct20 turbos too small. so i went twin turbo ct12's off of a 1g-gtte and have never looked back
i get 13psi at 1200 rpm and hold that for the whole rev range, it was expensive for the oil lines and itercooler piping but so worth it in the end.

what about the turbo of the 3ltr gu patrol?? would that be sutible?? i may be able to get a hold of one (mate is upgrading to a 6.5 chev)
why not just find the turbo used on the 12ht, shouldnt that be perfect for a 2h??

the turbo on a 12ht is a ct26, because the 12ht is direct injection it has much higher exhaust flow, which means it can spool the turbo better and alot earlier.
The garret MA24 off a 3litre patrol should be pretty well suited to the application, its at around the right volume to give you good boost over the whole rev range and they are ball bearing and have a small exhaust turbine housing in comparison to the compressor housing, making it easy to spool on low exhaust, but put out high boost.
as for the revs, every diesel has a rev governor, the 2h one has a hose that runs from the inlet manifold to the injector pump which means the more vacum the harder it sucks on your diaphragm in the injector pump, and the more it leans off the diesel. now you can adjust it to set the rev governor at higher or lower revs. but ultimately my 60 dosnt put out much more power after 3000rpm anyways.

well the 3liter turbo motor has been sold so i cant do that, but my mate has a cummins small truck turbo sitting in his shed i can have, was of a small 6 cyl, i havent got the part nos yet, but when i do i will post up, and if its right, or only slightly to big i will consider it.

...maybe. In my understanding T3/T4 is a whole lot bigger than a gt2860 though. It's also a bush bearing turbo - I think alot of the performance of my turbo could be down to the ball bearing core.60seriesasthmatic wrote:So based on waht you're using dogbreath this one would be fine

I'd personally steer away from 'ebay turbos'. They're cheap and MIGHT actually be a quality item but not worth the risk. If the turbo fails your engine could be choking on metal shavings or losing oil/water at a pretty serious rate! For budget i'd be looking at a second hand unit off a ~2-3L jap import - many of these came with a ball bearing garret standard (tho not the gt2860)
Alternatively i have a toyota CT26 and 12h-t manifold i could be interested in parting with

Hey there, you may remember my yellow 2h turbo powered 75 ute with big front mount cooler and BOV blazin around Boyne/ Tannum bout a year ago? It's gone now , but anyway, the kit I put on it, had a standard exhaust manifold with adapter to an Air Research T04 with no wastegate. Bit big I thought, it started making boost around 2200. From there it would just keep increasing to around 17psi at 4000. I never revved it harder than that but with boost referencing the fuel pump, it would not limit the revs anymore so you had to watch it. The young bloke at the Sunny coast that bought it said "it makes good power between 4200 and 5100". " Sh1t, you can't do that" I said. Just for my 2c worth, my turb and cooler setup was installed 4ish years ago and still flies well.
My setup came from a donor vehicle ( was carts old 60 ) and it is a truly reliable setup with boost building from about 1400 ish revs, it'll happily keep up with petrol vehicles and get bring my loaded truck up hills without revving it to redline
fuelling is good - about 12/100km loaded, of course more with the loud pedal

this was on 35's and 4.1 diff...also i dont care about the pod and i dont want to here about it

That diaphragm is the accelerator diaphragm only, by adjusting that screw you only increase the fuel delivery throughout the rev range up to the rev limit. The rev governer is seperate from the accelerator and is directly underneath and has it's own adjustment screw.

When turboed the 2H's rev governor is overridden by the boost pressure on the accelerator diaphragm so they just keeps on revving. The young bloke that bought my 75 ser 2H-T is revving it to 5100 everyday, or so he says.

holy crap. Mines making enough chaotic mechanical noise at 4000rpm! Does run out of breath around 3700 but doesn't 'hit a wall'. What affect does boost + extra fuel + the desire for extra rpm have on the timing? Should timing be adjusted from standard? ( migt be a silly question but I'm not up to speed on the method of timing adjustment)
