GQ cracked diff housing

Post by madman89 »

Gday fellas.

I have a 92 gq.

I discovered a small crack in my gq front diffhousing along the bottom weld of the triangular section near the pumkin. Crack is only 40-50mm long and hairline, but enough to allow oil to seep out.

Originally to fix this the crack was v' ed out and welded using standard mig wire in tig welder. idea being to localise heat when welding as much as possible.

Since then it has cracked again, just above where it was welded first time.

I am wanting to know specific techniques people have used to rectify cracks in diffs?

Has anyone else had this problem.

cheers, jerom.

chuck it.

Unless you're going to brace and gusset the whole thing to try and reinforce it, it's just going to keep cracking and causing you problems.

Wait around for a cheap set of GU diffs to pop up and grab them.

cracked diff.

Post by madman89 »

Thanks for the input fellas.

The crack is nothing on that one you got paul. haha.
I've welded it up again so it'll at least hang on to the oil and perhaps when it goes again i'll look at bracing or a new housing.

I was talkin to a bloke who repairs truck diffs and he reckons when they crack in that general location they are usually not really repairable because of the flex (even tho tiny amount) of the diff.

anyhow..

cheers blokes!
