Gutless and slow boosting ZD30 help

Post by ZAPPADUALCAB »

Have a 2004 zd30, Has done 180k. I have had a few dramas from the time that I purchased the car,30k ago. The engine has had some dust in it from the car dealer installing non genuine air filter but doesnt appear to of damaged the engine itself, not using any oil or blowing any smoke.
I have the dawes valve and did have the needle valve setup(taken out to fault find) The egr is blocked and I havent had to touch the adjustment on the turbo. It has had a compression test and although the compression was down slightly across the board (probly the kays) cant find anything wrong. Has brand new maf, I have cleaned out intercooler and piping which was full of a beatiful mix of oil and dust!!
I felt the performance drop off on a long trip towing cartrailer thru hills into Perth. Thought I must have picked up some shitty fuel so did fuel, air and also changed out maf with good spare. No difference.
It lacks power off idle(more than usual) and is slow to spool up. I get about 3psi at 1500rpm if Im lucky and about 8-9 at 2000rpm then will fly up to 14psi. I have a catch can fitted. Took out the dawes valve and its no better, have reset computer and will not throw up any codes. Have also changed out boost sensor.
Can the dust damage the turbo compressor wheels to the point that the turbo will not spool up properly? Can the vanes get stuck?(the actuator arm is still moving)
Any ideas or advice will be greatly appreciated as I am at the end of my tether!! Sorry for the long post.
Cheers Zappa

hi bud,

im no expert in this matter but yes the dust - depending on how much was exposed to the turbo - sounds like alot, could damage your turbo. they spin incredibly fast, they could be worn or perhaps even damaged from getting hot from the friction of particles comming in contact with the vanes moving at 30000rpm or what ever they do.

can you pull off the intake to the turbo and visually inspect the vanes?

but im not 100% convinced this is your problem, just doesnt sound like i would expect it to behave. sorry i cant help more.
*there's a rock, drive over it :) there's a bigger rock, drive over it  there's an even bigger rock, oops broke it  Upgrade broken bit :bad-words:

first thing........

what vehicle is it?
i assume its a patrol or terrano. it would pay to ask on the patrol forum.
at a guess i'm picking turbo is sticking. you should be able to rev the motor and see the actuator move. if it doesn't its stuck and will need turbo pulled apart and cleaned.
just also check the turbo vac valve and actuator itself is working.

Cheers guys, its a 2004 patrol, when I pull the actuator vac line off I can see it drop and it pulls back up to the stop when reapplied, could the vanes still be stuck?

I have posted on the patrol forum but its actually getting too big! People all over the world are on it and its hard to get any advice. Before your thread is off the page

thats normal for forums. just go back and bump your post if need be.

vanes sticking is a common problem with VNT's.
