gu 2.8 blowing grey smoke on first start up

Post by jaykabir6489 »

my gu 2.8eti has had a full engine rebuild and has started to miss one cylinder on start up for about 15 seconds and blows a fair bit of grey smoke, i have a feeling the glow plugs were not replaced, just woundering if that could be an issue? and could a dud one cause any lack of power once the engine has warmed up?

also looking for any quick tips to make it go any better or get better economy.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I cant see how a dud glow plug would affect it once its going and warmed up.

Who did the rebuild/refit??
tke it back to them to sort out

Were the injectors and pump reconditioned? A glow plug could cause the start issue but not the lack of power.

I'd bet AJ's balls it your glow plugs for the start up issue. The glow system on the 2.8s is a complete mothfuckle.

Lack of power would be something else once warm.

Sounds like a glow plug.
If you are replacing the glowplugs get some decent ones - the crap off Ebay doesnt last long and caused me dramas. I used the original NGK brand after that and no more troubles

The 2.8 is fairly lazy from the factory, but there is some things you can do in the way of exhaust, turbo boost and fuel, free flowing air intake just to name a few

I have a 2.8 GU. It is what it is, BUT 3 inch exhaust, snorkel and DP chip have made it go heaps better. More power at all revs, turbo comes on boost at about 1800 revs and it whistles all the way.

thanks simsy :finger:

whats the dp chip worth?

im thinking maybe my turbo's fucked and leaking a bit of oil, its not so much makin a nice wistle sound anymore more like a wurrring noise and doesnt seem to hit boost until abour 2400ish then the power dies off at about 3800.

i guess i may aswell change the glow plugs either way

cheers for the responses guys

the 2.8s aren't that bad they have just as many comon problems as the rest ..

ive had the same problem with mine its the glow system in the 2.8s
the plugs are normally fine but in the 2.8s they have two stage glow plugs
look at the plugs u will see two power rails most others have one

the problem is in the ECU its located in the kick panel on the passanger side $80 bucks second hand but they don't last forever
i replaced it and fix the problem but its started doing it again

Its only really a problem in winter i just give it a LITTLE gas as i start it
and doesn't start to bad if you stand behind when its cold you will notice
puffs of grey every couple of seconds

Grey smoke is unburnt cold fuel and black hot fuel
Blue is time to sell it.. or oil
