60 series power steering box VS 80 seires

Post by hurricane »

tryed a search but came up with no info i needed.

im doin a 80s coil convertion into my 60s.

ill need to use a 80 series steering box pitman arm so it will clear the panard mount and so the drag link will fit on.

i need to move my steering box forward so the spring tower will fit in.
and will have to redrill the mounting holes again.

so i can use ether a 60s or an 80s box.

what i want to know is will the 80s pitman arm fit on the 60s box?
and is there any performance differneces between the two box?
does one work better? etc

cheers, dan

Hi Mate,

i thought id reply since no-one else has....

all i can help you with is, i have a 60 series powersteering box in my FJ40 and im running 37" TSL boggers and it does the job no worries!!! the key is a good steering dampner/return to centre....

now in my case there wasnt an off the shelf one that tough dog had, so they modified one for me...

also the 60 and 80 box are a similar design but i think the bolt holes a slightly different and also the diamiter of the tie rod ends are different im pretty sure... the only reason i mention this is because i had to get my tie rod end machined so i could use 40 and 60 steering components together...

hope some of that helps ya
Joey.

cant help much with steering box, though the 80s are prone to twisting the sector shaft (output)
I twisted a sector shaft, then changed the box and twisted the replacement 12hrs later :bad-words: they werent being caned at the time either

If you set your caster angles correctly RTC dampers are not needed and are a waste of money and load up the steering system for no gain

Have a look at this thread on mud, might give you some ideas and help:

I also will be very interested in seeing a local build up of 80's diffs under a 60

ok well with out reading this info before hand, ive mounted the 80s box in

1, it being newer than my 60s unit i though it might work better.
2, the housing looked better and stronger, so might be better.
3, the bolt pattern was more suted to the box tilting forward so it fitted on the chassis better, as i had to move the steering box about 5 inchs forward.
4, the power steering line mount in the top of the box more towards the rear so it looked like it will clear my holden P/S pump better ( i hope).

well i guess ill see how it goes? worst case i plate the side of the chassis and start again :s

will be starting a write up of my 60s possible on the weekend, to the stage that im at.
