blew white smoke water in both air filters. run like shit but now fine. how much water can they take and will wy motoer be fucked????

Hard to say...... some times you will bend a rod on the cylinder that took the water in, and still run although the piston will no longer reach the same deck height and be down on compression.........therefore be down a bit on power but they sometimes will not stop completely.

I wish I had your luck, mine stopped dead :?
Somehow managed to get enough water into the intake to stop it dead
although the water I was in was less than a foot deep, it barely made it up to my hubs, I'm guessing I was just unlucky :cry:
Had my mechanic look at it and see how bad it is, it no worky :cry: :cry: :cry:

Can anyone recommend a decent rebuild kit?

Damn that does sound like bad luck, Now i aint too clued up on the 4.2 pettys but i imagine it would almost be as cheap too head too the wreckers and pick up another motor instead of rebuilding it ? because i know you can pick up a full GQ 4.2 petty for less than 1k in working condition. Might be worth looking into it

td42 not tb mate. she is a diesel and to be rebuilt will cost a pretty penny.

get a comp check done and see if its down on a cylinder or cylinders.

if its not i think u could be one of the most lucky ppl i kno.

and shows how important a well sealed snorkel can be hey.

I shall definately be getting a snorkel fitted when its rebuilt, but i have to get it rebuilt first.

Another question on the TD42, I have a younger BIL that is into the drift scene and he is "egging" me on to bore it out and such, figures while I'm pulling the engine apart and all that i may as well modify it and such. Now my question is, does it realy do much for the old girl? Would i need to modify the injector pump et al??

Probably more bother than its worth.
Still no recommendations on kits? I have seem a few around for ~$1500 mark for bottom end and piston kits.

best band for buck power upgrade is a turbo on the td. I wouldnt worry about boring it out etc.

if you did the change would only be minimal and the fuel pump could be tuned to keep up fine.

The rebuild will cost so much that you will probably find your self saying... jesus im certainly not spending any extra on this thing.

poor bugger. foot deep water - that sucks.

You do see td 42's second hand from people who are swapping in v8's etc for as little as 2500 bucks. ive seen some worked ones for similar money. depends on how soon you need it back on the road but worth considering.

Dont bother modifing the motor itself, just do a decent standard rebuild. if you want more power turbo it/fit bigger turbo. :)

If you have a bent rod it may snap a few months later.

Oops i forgot to say mine is a factory turbo'd one.

Yeah i didn't think all the mucking around with it would be worth the effort, might have a look at second hand engines, and rebuild this one when i can afford it (it sucks when :bad-words: happens all at once).


As i said with the kits, some come with replacement pistons/rods etc, so it looks like i might just replace all to be on the safe side.

Hi Mate prob a stupid question ,do you know anyone in the freight buisness, Over here in NZ i know of 3 wreeckers who have motors coming out their ears ,you can pick up a complete good motor minus alt/starter motor for around the nz800--1000 dollar mark

I have 2 td42 complete eng. have a gq early and a gq98 black top. I am thinking of putting the black top in my bus, either way i will be selling one. both are in cars and running if you get stuck. also would be interesting to see what costs are involved getting engines from NZ. also have a gq safari snorkel.

mods feel free to delete if this a "for sale" not tech. sorry.

With rebuild kits how does one ensure they are getting good rings?

I think some parts must stay sourced as genuine if I where to want to keep the engine for myself.

I floged my swb td42 for years and didn't break much till I washed it while it was running I drove it under a water truck filler point after the cessnock mud drags it hydrolic locked and bent a rod on number 4 but a week later my luck turned and I picked up a complete gq td42 Turbo with 6"lift, 35 pedes, rear locker bucket seats, cheesey winch bar , arb racks and dual baterys also had rego and was driving I got the lot for4k so there is bargains out there but if you have bent a rod and want to repair it you don't need a full kit just a rod and a few gaskets

Yeah, i'm just looking at prices for worst case scenario, won't buy anything till it gets pulled apart and i check out the aqctual damage.

Is there much difference between a gu and a gq engine, mine is a 2002 gu ute, non intercooled turbo diesel

Try engines australia. i just bought a SD33T kit including liners from them for 900$ TD42 was not much more i dont think
