Hi, I have just been told that the oxygen sensor needs replacing on my Pajero eveyr 50,000km. I dont think this one has ever been changed. Any idea if this is the case that it does have to be replaced at 50,000km? What problems would I be experiencing if it was playing up? Any idea how much these sensors cost?
Any help well appreciated.

It sounds a bit suspect to me. It is a special coated ?platinum? electrode which generates a voltage based on the amount of unburnt fuel in the exhaust (or something like that - I'm a little slow atm )
FWIW I installed a VR Commodore 4 wire unit (about as sophisticated as they come) in my Sigma (another crazy idea) and paid around $100 for a brand new sensor.
This sensor supplies the feedback for the computer to get the mixture right. If it's wrong then your mixture will be wrong too - can be quickly checked by any workshop with a decent exhaust gas analyser.

50,000kms is crap. If they do not experience Leaded fuel they will work happily to over 100,000kms. After this their response tends to slow and fuel economy will suffer.
I would say 100,000km -150,000km is more feasible. They obviously work beyond this but fuel economy won't be best.
It degrades so slowly, most people would never know. It's only after changing it that you realise what you were missing out on

Oxy Sensor Failure
I severeged mine going off road... long story short... computer went into Limp-Home mode, flooded the engine with fuel, burnt the sparkies, Melted the Cat Converter and then... since the wires were swinging in the breeze underneath... shorted to the chassis and blew the computer.
OUCH. $4000.00 damage.
You'll notice bad fuel consumption, and lots of black smoke out the tail. Low power and constant stalling.
You dont need to chance every 50,000. Only on failure or abnormal operation.

I've just been wondering if my sensor may be getting a bit tired at 125000Km and if this is the cause of the increase in fuel usage I have noticed lately? Has anyone had any experience with cleaning or reconditioning the sensors, or they just a throw away item?
Yet another chance to donate more money to the spare parts gods I suppose. (Just replaced my power steer belt idler pulley at a cost of $145 from Mitsu, as nobody seemed to have aftermarket ones).

3.5 L with too much stuff, and a front locker waiting on the shelf.

I have vague recollections of reading about somebody cleaned a dodgy O2 sensor and it came good again - I think the theory was oil build-up on the surface reduced sensitivity, so it wasn't reading well.
Can't remember what it was cleaned with - have you tried a Google search on cleaning them?
