No power and loud clattering .. OIL SLUDGE DID IT !!
Well on my way to work today I notuced heading along the usual rouute that the paj dropped back to third (auto) to climb a hill it normally climbs in 4th at 110 .. "been a while since I replaced the air filer I say to my self" .. all the other gauges look OK ..
5 mins later I hear a tappety like noise .. B-Double right up my clacker .. look for a spot to pull up ... 30 seconds later noise is WAY worse very angry man with a hammer .. buy the time I pull up I know it is BAD (oil pressue had dropped 30psi) So I am hoping it is a lifter noise .. but I know it is bottom end ...
Plenty of oil in it .. recently serviced (4000 ks ago with penrite HPR gas oil) ..
Sooo where is that thread about the guy in on a round aus trip replaced his motor with a magna motor somewhere in tassie ..

This doesn't sound good. I doubt that it will be the bottom end (bearings) because that would not cause you to lose power. It sounds as if you have lost one cylinder - possibly a piston broken? If you can do it, a compression check will tell you a lot. If it is a piston tand there is no major damage, it may be repairable although a Magna engine may be easier to fit up.

Dropped the oil .. lots of bearing material and bits of swarf .. not going to bother looking further ..date wrote:Love-Mud:

Time to get on the phone and find a replacement I think (This one has done 280,000 )
Economy etc was not bad previously (18L per 100 on LPG would easily cruise at 110 and happily pull up to 130 tio get past a B-Double if needed ) was showing no other signs of impending doom..

well I got it all apart today .. OIL SLUDGE galore .. That motor must have been in pain for some time .. the oil pickup is 80+% blocked..
Talking to a bloke who does alot of work on magna's etc he said that was what it would be ..
So how do I disolve oil sludge .. I need to re-use the oil pickup etc on the magna motor ..

No power and a loud clattering .. OIL SLUDGE DID IT !!
Ever hear of Elbow grease and brushes and lots and lots of either parraffin or Kerosene then a air line to dry the pickup filter out, while you are doing that give the sump a good soak in either or both parra or kerro and make sure you clean the oil pump real good too.
When was the oil and oil filter last changed, must be a fair while for it to get into that position, that you have found, TUT,TUT, smack that geezers hand or give his head a good rub against a rough wall.

My car .. oil\oil filter has been changed every 7500Ks since I have owned it which has only been the past 25000 kilometers .. the damage was done (sludge) long before it come into my posession OI would say.scorpion 42 wrote:Ever hear of Elbow grease and brushes and lots and lots of either parraffin or Kerosene then a air line to dry the pickup filter out, while you are doing that give the sump a good soak in either or both parra or kerro and make sure you clean the oil pump real good too.

I will be takeing it all down (sump, oil pickup, oil pump) to an engine reconditioning shop just a few doors up from my place to put it all in their hot tank for a while .. I love having a father in law in the auto parts business .. he knows everyone.

Sorry to hear about this disaster. I bought a Range Rover years ago which had been 'serviced' every 10000 km - as the book said. Except that it took about 18 months to knock up 10000 km. The sludge in the oil galleries leading to the valve rockers was thick and hard and I finished up boiling the heads in a 4 gallon drum of Omo washing powder. They came up really well. Needless to say, it had regular oil changes ever after.
I would say that all the oil galleries - including the crankshaft, engine block and heads will have to be thoroughly cleaned out or you will be doing this job again some time in the future.

Given the amount of metal in the oil and sludge and the cost of another low K motor .. (less than $900 for a motor that had 80,000ks on it) The one I am removing is for recycling..date wrote:Sorry to hear about this disaster. You should change the heading of this post, to !!
Some lazy, tight fisted previous owner, couldn't be bothered to change the oil and filters on this engine and this is what happens
and now YOU will have to pat for IT.
The magna motor is in and all hooked up -- Found one hose I had missed when filling up the radiator .. bugger.
Started as soon as I let it (cranked it for about 4-5 bursts of 30-40 seconds each to get some oil moving)
Ran it for about 20 mins with a cheapie oil ..then dropped it all, changed filters etc .. Refilled with good oil Bonnet and engine covers back on.
Took the oppertunity to flush the trans as I had the torque convertor out etc .. Had 4 liters of fully synthetic fluid .. need about 6 .. So I am just waiting to top up the auto with trans fluid and should be right to take for a spin .. Sounds way better than the other motor ever did
