vehicle needed to tow and carry camper at the same time

Post by ANDREWGQ 351 »

I am currently looking for a vehicle to do all these things at once
your thoughts will be helpfull

I need it to be able to
tow my 18' speed boat
carry 4 people
carry a slide on camper 9-10 feet long, i will custom build this to suit vehicle
mild 4x4 driving into campsites etc

a std car licence would be best
cost under $20,000
any fuel type is ok
can not be underpowered, 80 up hills is ok

thanks guys

F250 comes to mind.

it's going to have to be something like an old F truck or Chev for that money.

Nothing else is big enough. Even a chopped large wagon like a patrol or cruiser would need extended chassis and probably a third axle to carry a 3metre camper and 4 people.

If you can make the camper smaller (2 metres/6 feet) it opens up more options. It's not like you've already got the camper, you're going to build one to suit yeah?

With the smaller camper you can look for dual cabbed and extended patrols and cruisers, plenty of power (a few mods could make them better), good fuel economy (compared to old f truck), comfortable and capable. Or a 130 defender dual cab. Plenty of load capacity on one of them.

My two cents anyway. Good luck

finding a f truck twin cab is not easy,
i knoww that 6 feet would be better as there are a lot more slide on's around but 6 feet is quite small.
thought about the Defender but i dont know about their comfort or power, might be wrong but its what i have heard

You won't get a 10 foot camper on the back of a defender.

Have you thought about a 4x4 mitsubishi canter truck? there is one on car sales for 4k. It needs work (obviously). It's a single cab but a visit to the wreckers can fix that. then you will have plenty of chassis to put a camper on.

at 20k you need to be handi capable in the shed. Other wise start saving, or start compromising. Do you really need 4x4? you can get 2wd canters for well under 20k and they are big enough. they are also reasonably capable off road. They go on uneven tracks through parks and construction sites all the time. You could possibly fit a diff lock to the rear axle as an upgrade.

if you keep the camper at 6ft and only for sleeping and cooking, then annexes off the sides, then you will find life easier.

Have you thought of a 4x4 wagon with 2 roof top tents and a kitchen in the cargo area. Will be a lot more comfortable driving and the roof top tents are great always sitting in the breeze. You will pick up a great car that wont need any work or is not worn out.

thanks for the sugestions
i have thought about a small truck and it may be the best option, and probably capable enough off road as a 2wd considering what it will be carrying. i wanted to get away from using a tent and a roof top tent wont work with little kids.
the idea of a slide on was to use a second vehicle during the week and allow sitting area inside when its bad weather.
6 feet is to small to sit in without added canvas as said but would be easier to carry i agree.
i am able to build what ever is needed its just a matter of whats best to start with

I always though about building up one of those Canters as a tourer...... Does anybody know if there is any "offroad" tyres are available for them?

Buy a bigger boat you can sleep and cook inside it, then you wont need a camper on the back. If you go big enough you will be able to motor it to where you want to go instead of driving.

Or what about modifying your boat trailer with a frame to carry a rooftop tent over the boat and a camp kitchen on the drawbar? For $20K you might be able to have a custom trailer built and keep your current car..

Sort of like these:

This was my old man ute 4ton towing capacity but you would need to find a TD5 and put a chip on it to get any decent power out of her and for $20,000 you might find one in good nick

Hard to find one that's dual cab and 4x4. Some japanese 4x4 trucks around but I only see single cabs. Some dual cabs but I only see 2wd.
