That bit? That is indeed the air filter. I'm not quite sure how it goes bang - it's just a paper filter.
Does it still work? Might be something more terminal if it really went bang.
It looks like the generic GMC/SCA/'every other brand' 2.5HP/40L compressor. Bunnings can order parts (whether or not your store is willing to do it is another matter).
The filter housing itself just clips together so you should be able to pry it apart and pack in some filter wadding (might get it from a pet store for use in aquarium filters).
Might also get a complete filter from a tool shop like Gasweld, BOC, Hare & Forbes, etc...
Have you at least unscrewed filter and tested to see if the compressor still builds air? If compressor still works, you can use anything for a filter really, like if you have an old car airbox lying around, just adapt it onto the hole with a hose, etc...

I've just had to pull the head off the similar sized cheapo compressor I have. There is a plate sandwiched between the head and the cylinder with two one way valves. The valves are a piece of flat spring steel and cover plate, retained in the alloy with peened over tabs. In my case, the vibration had broken the peened tabs and the valve progressively failed to seal.
Take the head off and have a look. My money is on that.
Just went to Mitre10 and quickly looked at theres, yep inside the filter is just foam. Back home tried her again and I'm getting compressed air coming out the air filter, also getting air pushing out the oil filler as well. No pressure building, it's almost like its work backtofront.
Think I'll pull the head off and have a look as something aint right and I have a feeling your spot on the money
Its either the head gasket or the check valve. Probably the check valve, its the goldish cylinder in front of the gauges about 2 inches, the nut in the end will unscrew and there is a little ceramic or plastic piston that has probably dislodged. Its the non return valve for the thing.
could also be the head gasket as mentioned but check the check valve as you can do it for free first.
