THINKIN OF BUYING SOME TOUGH DOG ADJUSTABLES FOR MY GQ PATROL, JUST WONDERING IF THEY ARE MY BEST OPTION. I HAVE A 6 INCH LIFT. WILL ONLY BE BUYING FRONT ONES FOR THE MOMENT
myself and three other mates have run the tough dog adjustables for the past 4 years on both 80 series and gq patrols and have found them to be excellent shocks. We have found a happy medium in adjustment for on and off road but have wound them right down on different tracks. I was told from one of the guys from superior not to use the ranchos as they do have a problem with handling the weight of the patrols. Your best bet would be to speak to mike from superior engineering as he has fitted both types on comp and everyday vehicles.

On a GQ shorty without sway bars, I ran them hard on road for a bit more stability and soft offroad for comfort. how long u had your td's for and what did u pay for them, when u say (as it doesnt take long for the truck to handle like a boat) do u mean the shock has lost permormance or are u just talking about suspension mods in general. i have no swaybars either can get a bit hairy at 110 with my stuffed pro comps
I dont run it anymore, but had the TD's for about 18 months. I loved them except a tore the boots off the rear shocks fairly quickly, didnt affect performance though.
Paid $1000 for four.

Again, starting at 1, gradually stiffened up until I was happy. 3 was ideal for most situations. However I did fluctuate between 2 and 5 depending on the terrain and speed I was doing. I eventually got lazy making sure I turned them back to 7 on the road, so wound them all the way to 9 as it was easier. The ride was firmer and a bit harsher, but cornered much better.
Doesnt matter what shock you have, if you have a big lift, no sway bars, you need to sacrifice some of the plush ride for driveability (read: not floating like a boat).
I noticed several times going from on road to off road and turning the shocks down the GQ became a totally different vehicle to drive and required some getting used to.
Plenty of people bag the TD's, I loved them for my application and didint have one fail. However, I hadnt run them for as long as some other people.
Would i buy them again? Yes, for that budget. But shocks for my GU will be remote res Fox shocks, after being talked out of triple bypass for a tourer/play truck.

I know a few people who have had them on both Patrols and Landcruisers with some issues, whether it was an early model thing. I have them on my GQ now, I like the option of changing the valving to suit the style driving I am doing, my coils are a bit stiffer so off road they are on 1 and on road they are on 6 or 7.

I have the TD Adjustables in both my GQ's, SWB with 5inch Lift and LWB with 6inch Lift, neither run swaybars, both been running the shocks for excess of 4 years, I run a setting of 4 on the rear and 3 on the front for onroad and let them down to 1 or 2 all round for offroad use, slow speeds. Handles very well for cornering on hwy at 100 + speeds at the 3 and 4 settings. My 2 cents anyway.
i run em on my 5inch spring GQ which will be lower soon...i ran them originally on the hardest setting and hated it, they now sit on about 6 or 7 from memory and i like the ride ( no swaybars) i un them on 1 when off road, the only problem i have with them is that i snapped off 2 of the rear adjusters at the last comp....but i run them because i originally got them alot cheaper than RRP to begin with...when they flog out i may get Konis or something...or just go total wank factor and get remote resovoirs or something pointless like that
$600 you could get a pair of remote res fox 2.0s delivered to your door from the states. there are enough people round here now who have them from the states that can tell you good valving etc. they are soft but controlled onroad (leans round corners but doesnt sway or roll about uncontrollably) and offroad they are just smooth.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

For me and what advice I got, EFS extremes, Bilstein or Lovells would have been second option.

$379us for 2.0 remote res. thats under $300aus at the moment free valving aswell... shipping is $270 from memory and you will see them in 10 days.... you dont even get that service if you buy from the local shops.

then divide the shipping by 4 ($270/4=$67.50 each) then add the GST to the total. (($400.26 x 4)+($270)) x 1.1 = $1871.04 or $467.76each
But generally in my experience it always cost a few $ more as they always seem to add some weird charges.
Only problem is WHO covers the warranty on these? do you have to send them back to the US to claim.

ive put a set of superior race component shocks in the rear of the gq and while the car is only running in front wheel drive and they are still bedding in, so far im very impressed.
they have taken a heap of the body roll out of the car and handle the bumps quite well.
il try get my diff rebuild by anzac long weekend and give em a test off road and on a decent trip.
although probs a little out of the 500 buck price range they are great.
also they are 30 way adjustable.

my first impression is good i like them my car handles heaps better on the road , cant wait to go test them in the bush, my car is nearly ready

(All the 9000's are triple tube so if you dinted them on rocks there's way less chance of the piston seizing in the tube and stopping articulation altogether)
Those 9000X's are more designed and suited to slower rocky type wheeling not for a fully laden tourer cruising across corrugated outback tracks, I've got no idea what the XL's are like under a fully loaded Patrol or Cruiser etc.

The Xl's are still a really soft shock, ( better than the X) the biggest problem is their is hardly any sizes available in them , certainly not our recomendation for a full size truck like a patrol.
Vehicles like hilux's , navara ect they work really well.
Everyones taste is different, what some call nice some call hard, what some call hard some call soft
Rancho shocks fail in the warranty side as they dont like to warranty the larger length shocks the same as tough dog dont.
