The Autos are computer controlled and need a few different sensors. They definitely have TPS in the carby, so you'll need to swap that over, and retro fit one onto your carby. There's also a kick down switch and obviously the new pedal box.

Do some research I'm sure someone has written up a how to on either here or patrol 4x4.

It's not impossible but its far from a simple task. The GQ autos are also abit of a bitch on, but excellent off. Mine never behaves quite right on road and I've had to modify a few of the sensors to make it livable day to day.

Personally, unless your GQ is something special, I would sell it and purchase an auto.

I had a shift kit fitted when I had my TB42 auto rebuilt.

I know what you mean by not great on road but gets the job done. Off road the shift kit is really good, much better than before. Autos are so much nicer off road. People who knock it haven't tried it I'm sure.

I'm not sure how many of the problems are caused by it being under powered. But its always hunting for the right gear and wouldn't stay locked up in top gear on the highway. So I basically wound the TPS off the gauge so it doesn't kick down unless you give it a bootfull or put it in power mode.

yeah same thing, have to really keep it stoked to stop it from shifting in and out of overdrive/top gear. I think it's just because it's underpowered. Mind you, mine was dynoed at 92kw at the wheels with 33" baja claws and internal bead locks ( so pretty heavy wheels) . A fair ammount of power for such an old truck. Shame it needs about double that to be much good.
