200tdi help. (Think she's damaged)

200tdi help. (Think she's damaged)
Driving home last night, got home and discovered way too much smoke coming from her.
Sump oil has been pumping out of the top of the dip stick (and burning on the exhaust). Opened the oil filler cap and she's smoking more than a steam train would ever do.
Lifted the tappet cover and had a very quick glance; everything appears ok, though didn't check any tolerances.
Idles kind of ok, and there isn't really any big bangs and crashes from within. Down on power when driving though.
Just wondering what has let go within? (And Im assuming its burning sump oil big time to cause the massive amount of smoke)
Can the timing belt have slipped a notch or two as well?
Easy fix to replace the 200tdi with a TD5?

Could be your turbo seals blown allowing engine oil to pass thru the turbo into the intake, remove the hose to the IC and check for oil residue.
Forget about a TD5 swap as it will cost more than the vehicle is worth.

Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
Cheers for the comments about the TD5.Loanrangie wrote:Could be your turbo seals blown allowing engine oil to pass thru the turbo into the intake, remove the hose to the IC and check for oil residue.

Spoke to another bloke who said the same thing about the turbo seal. I didn't think of it before, but certainly makes a lot of sense.
Will have a look later tonight. Ta.

sump pressure
How much sump pressure is it building up? if it popped the dip stick i would doubt it's the turbo seals, more likely damaged pistion/rings....sorry
Re: sump pressure
Yep indeedly. Done a bit more looking. No oil coming from the turbo at all.dck7aok wrote:How much sump pressure is it building up? if it popped the dip stick i would doubt it's the turbo seals, more likely damaged pistion/rings....sorry
Someone posted somewhere (found via google with similiar problems) that it was his head gasket between cyl 3 and 4. Another bloke said he had a hole in the side of his block.
Undo the oil filler cap slowly, and *bang* - the oil cap flies off out of the hand and hits the shed roof. Thats the amount of pressure she's pumping out. Dumped the oil, no metal within.

my 300tdi had the same thing a while back, I had burnt a hole in the No3 piston. this was not a large hole but enough to alow the compression to blow te dipstick out. this was caused by a deep scratgh in the bore from a broken ring. I did a rebuild and went over the top as usual but the old block was saved and the 300 has more power than when new. a new head set me back $900 but you'll find the ally in the old one has gone soft and will let gaskets go occasionaly.
stock 300TDi, now with an extra two inches!!!!
Thanks D. Disco --- I'm leaning towards a hole in the piston with the amount of blowby that was being produced.
Engine is finally out. (270kg of lump.) Still trying to undo head bolts (mumble mumble grumble). Will see if its head gasket or pistons by the weekend. Couldn't pull head off within vehicle, due to engine sitting so far back towards the firewall / under the dash. (more mumble grumble)
And now that the engine is out, I say !damn! wouldn't a supercharged LS1 look nice in there. But then I'd have to go the GU bits route...
