the programmable channels are a waste of $ these days since most cops etc are digital.

And IMWO, you your relying on a radio to save your arse, buy something good. GME, Icom, etc... Not lucky chows, uniden etc.

try Prestige Communications in perth.. search here, plenty of happy users and cheap.

when i was shopping for a UHF i ended up buying a good 3w GME handheld... there was no need for an in-car unit (especially driving a soft top). The handheld covers a HUGE range and last ages between re-charging.

What's your budget? I've got a brand new Icom 400 that is doing nothing.

Just Purchased the oricom 050. Happy with it so far, feels to be a reasonably solid unit good clear sound ect... ended up getting from Wow sight and sound and managed to talk them down to $170. Nice and simple interface tuned all the cop channels in about 5mins (only major citys have gone to digital in Queensland.) Now to test its long jevity.

I looked at GME tx3100 there perfect if you dont have any spare DINs, but then you need to purchase external speakers as well (the speakers in them are crap due to there size) Ariels are dear as poison to get anything decent anyway (min $100) it all adds up quickly.

Tx3220 (I think that's the number!)

Anyway I got it from prestige communictions, came with an aerial for under $300. It's an awesome little unit. Does the job well for what I use it for.

I have purchased 4 of these so far from prestige, 2 for myself and 2 for family members who were impressed with mine. And always good fast service from prestige.

Is it worth considering the hand held units these days as they seem to be quite good? I am considering this option as I also do a few cruises in my VK and I could use the hand held for this as well.

We dont really do a great deal of crazy four wheel driving and can see the advantage even if we are with a group and so someone wants to go for a walk and mobile coverage isnt that great.

A proper unit still seems to be the way to go but what is the primary weakness with a decent handheld other than range (if it is an issue)?
