Where does everyone stand with Registration. I've been modifying the car getting ready for comps, and with a copper living down the road, I managed to get a letter in the mail from the Police Dept saying that I needed to put the car over the pits for a Vehicle Inspection.
It turns out that I can deregister the car and get another roadworthy for it to register it again, so this is what I have done. It doesn't have to go over the pits, just needs a roadworthy or safety inspection from an authorised inspector before it can get registered again.
I'm now at the stage where the car was going to be cut and have the cage installed while the back is off, but with it now having to be registered again, cause most comps require registration, I've got to decide what to do with it. Looks like modifying back to an everyday driver might be the go. I'm not going to go through the costs and pain of modifying back for an inspection by a corner service station, to then go and modify back again for comps/offroad.
This thing hasn't been driven on a bitumen/public road for 18 months (partly to do with more mods being done) and was never intended to be.
What does everyone else with modified cars that don't see the black top do?
I'm in the process of getting ready to relocate up to the Mackay region as well so don't have the time or the shed now to do any mods.

Leave the rego plates under the seat and don't put the window sticker on. That way they have nothing to go off to dob ya in to transport.
You can sell it to ya misses and change names on the rego. You might get away with once or twice but if it happens too much they will say that the car cannot be regoed again without transport inspection.

I like you Corry as well as many others are in the same boat, we only have rego because some comps require it. It is a pain and also an extra expence i would rather not have. My plates haven't been attached to yo lux for years.
The sooner every comp gets on board with not having to have rego the better!
I understand that there are many reasons for the rego, most of them are for scrutineering and insurance purposes but surely there is a way around these.

I spent all last year trying to get rego on my truck, but the RTA won't allow more than half the modifications I've done. This isn't because of dodgy work, they were very impressed with the design and build quality, but if they choose, they can request that all modifications be ADR tested. I didn't have the money or time to do this. The reality is, the majority of comp trucks that have rego, wouldn't pass with the gear they have on them at comps, so if the event requires rego for insurance reasons, this will give the insurer a reason to NOT pay up, if a claim were to be made. A situation I'm sure no event organiser wants. Events can be run without vehicle rego under CCDA. The sooner all events go down this path the better. We need more events for UNregistered trucks, like Tuff Truck!

Just on the Tuff Truck aspect, when I was running TTC I was adament that the rego rule was required. The reason was more for marketing 'the tuffest registered vehicle in Australia'-not insurance or the like. However, Tony Price and I spent some time with our solicitor before TTC09 and gained a much better understanding of the legal implications that arose from insisting on registration. You have done a very good job of summing up the explanantion that Tony and I learnt on the legal aspect and implications of rego in comp. Realistically, to cover themselves, competitors and spectators alike, any organiser of a 4WD comp should gain an understanding of the legal and insurance aspects of the event that they put on.

With CCDA filling this role down the track (pun intended ) hopefully life will become simpler for the competitors.

i like the idea of having 37s on and being able to go to beach etc.
took longer to build but having built to RTA standards was a goal for us.
obviously against unrego trucks very hard to be competitive tho.

Twon, for me I wouldn't know what paying to have something done to my truck was, being a mechanic myself I don't need to drive it down the street to have someone work on it. So having no rego for me or trying to keep it regoed is a pain in the ass. And for most comp trucks, and a lot of 4wd's these days the mechanic regoing it is putting his ticket on the line anyway, how can a full hydraulic steer car have rego????? But I know losts that's do

Only one or 2 people are prepared to do it or could be bothered.
If you look at the rego rules they are pretty hard to actually fail most cars unless its an absolute bucket of S##T.
Rego though should be removed from comps as long as the rules are written well enough that every comp doesn't turn into a tube buggy event.
eg X amount of factory chassis x amount of body depending on the comp which to a degree is why rego is left at some comps

i agree on the full hydro. personally thats why i havent done it yet. dont want to put the pink slip guy in that position. but i understand hydro assist is ok so looking into that.
alot of the pink slip stuff people are mad if they dont comply, brake test, seat belts in good order, tread depth etc.

My lux is registered and i only just sold my 37 "mtrs not long ago and yeah it looks streetable and could be fully engineered but i have a trailer and a tow car so i tend not to drive it.DIRTY ROCK STAR wrote:timmy i didnt say that was more wondering for chris. his rig looks neat enough to street.

There are that few a tracks around sydney that we are allowed to drive, for me it is not worth the hassel and expense for rego.

because i did the same for a street car years ago. i sold the car etc 2 yrs later i got a knock on the door saying we are following up paper work etc u never showed the car heres a $xxx fine.

I too have a comp car, and if i needed to get a roadworthy every year, would be asking them to risk there inspecters licence to allow me to compeet . Im in favour of dumping the rego on our comp cars , i would think that most comps dont run on gazetted roads. why couldnt we as members of the 4x4 clubs accross australia get an insurance company to underwright our individual cars ie to the cost of our third party insurance to cover us while competing and playing off road the half dozen times a year. transport department has no buisness with us then. for those who would like to drive to mechanic or cross a road from time to time, why cant we get a limited use rego for our cars like they run on forklifts , bobcats etc . some of these are as dodgy as they come and get away with it, because they rearly go on road. under this limited use legeslation, rules could be stipulated for the amount of on road use there would be, and in return they could understand that bigger tyres = wider wheel track allowing higher lift for those who see this as benificial ( depending on type of comp ) most of our cars are in better condition than half the buckets of puss on the road who have never changed a bearing, pumped in a bit of greese or changed there 20 year old suspention. how hard is it to understand that aftermarket springs ,draglinks, trailing arms and radius arms are stronger and safer than standard, what planet are the law makers on.

I am all for running comp trucks without rego for those who want to. I think that running a log book system with proper scrutineering and efective and enforcable rules in place would be a massive step in the right direction for the sport. I do think that this will happen over the next couple of years, but I would bank on anything just yet.
A major part of the reason for the Masters Series running with rego and engineering is asking for trucks to a certian spec and by asking for rego from a legal perpspective engineeres is a no brainer but it comes back to having a body who can write, manage and enforce a log booked system if rego is to be bypassed
