2.8 turbo and a few other questions?
swapped my old hilux for a 91 2.8 diesel single cab and needs a rebuild..now im an engine reconditioner so im getting it all cheap.sorta new to diesels though.and im only 9 months into my apprenticeship.but we would get approx. 3-4 3l's with aftermarket turbo's come into work and most are screwed.so figured i should make mine pretty bulletproof.
i wanna go nitrided(heat treated)crank with forged pistons and full engine rebuild, front mount intercooler and 3'' dump and exhaust no muffler, anyone think this is stupid?and what would be better?
how much boost do you think would be suitable for this sort of motor?was hoping around 14-16lb
now my question is what turbo is best to fit to get the most power out of it.
-2lt ct20 turbo, manifold setup is probably the cheapest but will it handle 14lb boost and make decent power.
heard a few people go on about the denco turbo?
would that be better?
how much more $$?
i got a mate that can make all custom exhaust manifold for it but would it make a big difference?
any other turbo's i could use or any information to get the most out of the diesel is much appreciated thanks?
cheers..smiley..

yea i was hell keen to go 3rz in mine yamaha 308 but a 91 with 2'' lift 2.8 diesel air con power steer needing a new crank came up from the hilux wrecker in caboolture for an amazingly cheap price. im good mates with him and i couldnt resist but to buy it.
got arb winch bar
2'' tjm lift
already got a crank for $60 from work
not a spot of rust in it
it was cheaper aand better to go this one instead of new cab and 3rz in mine.wanted $1100 for my new cab.lets just say i got this 91 at around the same price.
check out my build up its got all the info on it there dude.
break head bolts?never heard of that.could be something to look out for though.

its commonly accepted by a lot that 9 to 10 lbs is the accepted safe boost level on this motor if you want longevity. And if your doing the job properly wouldnt you nitride the crank anyway?
Secret to those engines is clearances and using thin oil and regular oil changes with filter (every 5000 religiously)

If your doing a full rebuild you'd probably replace the head bolts with some decent aftermarket ones that can handle what you want out of it.
And from what I've heard those CT20 aren't good for much more than 12lb boost but could be wrong?
If your in Engine Recon ask the guys at work what you can do to it to make the most of it any good shop will have a few tricks up their sleeve's.
Cheers

yea im pretty keen on a turbo diesel for the matter that it will be legal for me to drive.im on my red p's still.
plus fuel economy and always wanted a turbo diesel for the torque they got and the sound(haha).
yea blokes i work with are like trying to talk to a tin can.they just rattle on about shit how i shouldnt buy a 3l.
dont get me wrong they know alot of stuff but im just the shiat kicker so they give me shiat about buying a 3l lol.
they will give me a hand though when i get them by themselves.
if i went 12lb should i still go forged pistons?will be alot cheaper if i didnt have to?
then i could run ct20 and not so much f@cking around.
i know you probably think im a wanker yamaha_308 cause im talking all this shit but im trying to work shit out so i dont run into problems like i did with the 83 i got.thing keeps breaking down.
cheers..smiley..

ima looking at doing the same to my ln106r
ive jus got a 3l with a spun big end bearing an looking at rebuliding it
i currently have a 3l with the ct20 turbo in the hilux and in my part feals really sluglish and dead (and yes i know its a 3l and i know there not huge horsepower motors). im jus looking for a lil bit more go go rather tha resorting to puting a 1kz out of a surf into it.
i also wanna know wats a realli good turbo up grade as i wanna pump more boost
has anyone heard of doing head work on one? i was thinking of gettin mine ported so i can get better flow from the turbo?
i know a lil bit bout toyota's (as i spent 2yrs of my apprentship fixing the things) but ima unshure bout pulling more power outa these motors sooo any info on this would be a great help?

how much power do you want from these motors? They are a dinosaur diesel engine that are very simple to work on. I run a ct20 from a 2LT-E surf on my 2.4, pump 12lb boost into it and she seems to fly.
With 35s, 4.88s and the turbo will happily stay on 120km/h but at 3000rpm. My 2.4TD seems to fly compared to when it was N/A. If you want something thats quick I would suggest buying a commodore.
If you want to run 12lb boost and also want the reliability, get dished pistons and the thickest head gasket.

It's not a factory turbo diesel so would need to be mod plated and P platers are not allowed to drive vehicles that have mod plates83-mud-lux wrote:yea im pretty keen on a turbo diesel for the matter that it will be legal for me to drive.im on my red p's still.
High powered (performance) vehicle restrictions apply for the duration of P1 and P2 licence periods for licence holders under the age of 25 years.
These restrictions also apply to probationary licence holders who return from a disqualification to a P1 or P2 probationary licence, where at the time of the offence they were under 25 years of age. These limits apply for the duration of the probationary period regardless of age.
High powered (performance) vehicles include those with:
- eight or more cylinders
- a turbo-charged or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered
- an engine that has a power output of more than 200 kW as per the manufacturer's specifications
- a rotary engine that has an engine capacity of more than 1146cc as per the manufacturer's specifications
- a modified engine that must be approved under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management — Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999, section 30.
Not trying to rain on you parade but would be a pain spending all that money on turboing it only to get pulled up by the fuzz and get done for it and have to pull it all off. If it was me i'd still rebuild the engine strong to turbo it later when it is legal for you to drive it
If ignorance is bliss, then why aren't there more happy teenagers?
