Ive read plenty of info on what gearing everyone uses and like with Manual 5spd in Zooks but what Transfer and Diff Ratios do the people who run with AW4 auto Trans (or others)??
Im thinking 33's, Diffs 4.6, Trans 4.1, Auto AW4, would be great. (this will be for a road registered zook)
I tend to think 4.9 Trans would be too low and 6.5 would be way too low!

The little motors like to rev .. let em.. peak torque is not until the high 4000rpm area from memory
With your auto it needs gearing to work effectively .. I would at least be looking at the 4.16 tacse (strength on these gears can be hit and miss) I would most likley opt for the 4.9's for there far better reputation of quality.

The engine you are putting in makes some good torque down low so I wouldn't gear it like my 4age 20v that makes its power up high...4.9 tranny, 4.57 diffs, 1:1 final drive auto. 4600rpm @100km/h and loves it.
you'd probably want something like 3.9 diffs, 4.9 tranny (1.6:1 high range), 0.7:1 final drive on the AW4 (a guess) which gives around 107km/h @ 3000rpm. This will give you a crawl ratio of around 60:1 which is acceptable for vic (based on 3.1:1 first gear guess)
Going to 4.6:1 diffs will get you at 91km/h @ 3000rpm...and crawl of 70:1 (based on 3.1:1 first gear just a guess)

I think your numbers sound OK. I get 54.6 crawl, pretty sweet with the high stall ratio on an AW-4, and you'll be cruising at 3500rpm.

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
I've run around 60:1 with an AW4 on 31's and 32's with front and rear lockers in Vic and that was pretty good and 33's would be fine too. I wished I had the gearing when I had the 33's on.

DanK the reason for getting away from the 3.9's was to share the load across the driveline with 4.6diff and 4.1 trans. i was thinking that it would be more reliable that way.
More info for all, the motor will be a J20a so bit more grunt than G16b. Lockright rear, airlocker front, WT diffs with NT spacing, in a LWB.

I think high range will be so close its not worth worry about, but low range Im thinking that the 4.9 might be getting a bit low? Also adding CJ coment about the TCC not letting OD come on in low range would also make a difference. But wouldnt the Auto/TCC not now when its in low range because its in a sierra transfer not the Vit transfer?
The other way I was thinking would be 4.1 trans and go 4.88diffs.
This way would be crawl 58.4 and 3350rpm@99.6klm, this might be getting a good option?

Hey joe, how much trans tunnel work did you have to do to get your auto to fit?

I currently dont have a body lift, but have a just cruzen 2" sitting in my shed ready to go in.
Do you have any pictures?
Did you have to get a custom jack shaft made up?
Did you use the vitara transfer or did you take it off and just use a leafy case?

Ha, except for a few quick laps around the block after dark, I have only had it on a road once. That was on a good gravel road and it cruised along nicely at 100kph, can't remember what rpms it was doing, but it definitely wasn't gasping for breath. Steve (the previous owner and builder) has told me he had it to 140 on the highway. I have a car trailer, so haven't tried to re-register it. It does crawl really nice. For me, there is nothing I would change in this combination of tyres, gearing, engine and auto. Not sure what it would be like in the type of driving you do in Victoria but it is great for Menai type driving, which is where it has been used most over the years.

1.6, 4 speed auto and dual transfers (standard geared cases).
a body lift will make the driveline fit better.

if you just use the auto you will need a custom jackshaft, and if using low range gearsets in just the sierra case than make sure your mounts are substantial. a short shaft and low geared t/case is not the best combo on standard mounts. you DON'T need to move the t/case back when using only the one transfer.
