Could be on the cards, would it be better to use nissan diffs or 80 series diffs?
Which would adapt the easiest?

80's.

Rear is offset for cruiser.

Gu's rears are alittle to the left of the centreline. Unsure about gq.

Cheers mate good stuff.

Has anyone in Aus done one? If so what sort of price am i looking at. Found a couple from US but parts are way different price than here.
Id leave it as leaf if someone could point me in the right direction of a good comfortable leaf set.

Alot of people seem to use the 80' chassis with all mounts..Id prob look into that but normally seen with 40 series shells



Otherwise. Anything is possible in a fabrication workshop if you arn't doing it yourself.

wozza, as far as i am aware with the leafs, if you want to carry significant weight you wont get much comfort. and if you want flex you wont get much carrying capacity, either one is a trade off for the other.

i am planing to remove quite a few leafs from my spring packs so that they flex better but will carry less weight, that way they should be more comfortable, and i will get new mains made with some more length and the correct spring rate for my use, trouble is, with new mains, i dont know much about that so i will have to talk to some people that do.

with the coils, wouldnt it be much better to use the 60 diffs, and just weld on coil hats to the diffs??

or use a full 80 chassis and bolt the 60 to it? and all your bits.

your going to have to go through engineering any way, so each way is viable

Be carefull not to remove 2many as to induce axel wrap unless you plan to add a track bar or similar.

buy quite a few i meant from all, so 2 or 3 from all, i didnt mean leaving me with only 4 leaves lol....

im planing on doing it trial by error, remove the smallest thickest first, see what happens, if nothing remove the next one, it might mean i end up with the smallest and thickest back in and 2 from the middle out, i dont know yet.

but yes i may have to look at a track bar, and when that time comes i will try to learn about them too.

All good mate, yeah the 80 chassis looks like the go, might stick with leaves since i have put all the effort into getting it engineered as is.

I dont carry alot of weight and im not after super flex, its a tourer but i want a comfy ride on road when unloaded, i have airbags in rear to help with load anyhow.

I have removed 2 leaves out of the rear already still stiff as, it didnt even have any thick load bearing leaves in the pack.

Who would i take it to/ask to work out spring rates etc?

umm taking 3 leaves out will leave you needing a track bar if you wheel anything that isn't flat. i need one with standard 55 series springs.

Im doing the 80 series rear diff in mine wozza,

60 series flex really good in the front but not so good in the rear.

So coil conversion is the way to go, 80 series diff is a little wider than 60 also and they already have disc brake :armsup:

I just bought new EFS springs front and rear for mine and i removed 2 leaves from the rear packs, its really soft now and drives good... i told them i want soft flexy springs, they got the front right bit the back was still a little stiff!

But....my mind is made up and i want coil rear, ill work on the front later.

Bought them dirrect through EFS, cost me $800 delivered from Brisbane to Grafton.

Really happy with the springs, the front was spot on but i just had to remove a couple leaves from the rear.

I wont be carrying anything except a spare and some camping gear when we go away.

I just wanted them soft.

What are you building now Wozza,

I know they cop a bit of abuse on this forum, but after doing some reasearch and spending time with the pro's, a well set up drop shackle system will give you the travel you need, still be able to carry decent loads, and be much easier to set up. Due to the weight of 60 series diffs you should get decent travel with standard springs as well. All this commotion about them unloading on side slopes is rubbish if they are set up properly. It would be no idfferent to a soft coil spring set up unloading on side slopes.

This will most likely get flamed, but Wazza I would give Michael at Superior a call and see what they can do for you. If not, Lukey from Lukeys 4x4 would be able to sort sort a coil conversion in his sleep. I'd give him a call as well mate.

how is the "unloading rubbish - no different to a soft coil spring" even possible? assuming the coil is retained, there is always the "tension" of the coil acting on the diff housing. a drop shackle by it's very design means there is uncontrolled movement (by uncontrolled i mean movement that is not directly influenced by spring tension).

plus standard leafs can be set up to outflex (with good, useable flex) anyone's requirements. flex is so over rated it's not funny. having reasonable flex that works at the same time at both ends, and/or a low centre of gravity, coupled with lockers will see you much further than something that ramps a stupid number, but is unstable and/or puts no tire pressure to the ground on the droop wheel.

look at Gut's hilux for instance on leaf springs done right. or BJ42turbo's 40 series. heck my POS with standard, spring under axle, and normal shackles has more than enough flex

it's easier to do both at once. and getting the spring rates right for leaf front, coil rear will be a PITA

This is the new weapon mate its coming along well, i havent updated much here but its always getting money spent on it.

That would have to be the neatest cab chop on a 60 ive seen yet mate.

Looks like a good buy, the old diesel chevs are torque monsters hey.

Its a 60's thing...others wouldnt understand :D

im half way with runing 80s coil setup in my 60s and will start on the rear soon.

as u have a ute cab i would look at getting a rolling 80s chassis aand mounting your cab on there, if not, running the 80s setup under the 60s is in no way hard if your good and fabing up things, ive used all the stock mounts.

only issues im havin is my front panrad and steering angles with a 6 - 8 inch lift :P

so far it rides like a dream compared to leafs and its not even finish'd.

some time sson ill be getting onto writing my car up, so u can look out for it i guess.
