ok the Mav will be ready to paint by next Monday if all goes well and its gettin done in 2 pac
now the questions i have are....
1) do i need to treat the bare metal before primer?
2) do i use etch primer before chuckin the bog on or just slap it on?
3) if so is the a special etch primer to use with 2 pac paint?
reason i ask is that ive been told by several different people different things!

2 pac paint questions!
Im not a gyno but ill take a look at it for you!
Hey mate. To answer your questions:
1) You need to etch bare metal before priming. Make sure to give it a good buzz (sand) to get rid of any surafce rust. I usually just go over in 120 from memory using an ordital sander.
2) Yeah you always get mixed reviews for this one. I have always body filled then etched over. You want to buzz the metal down in 80 or so so that it has something to grab to. Most people I know in the trade etch over.
3) You can use a 1k etch. Try to keep it the same brand to save any issues but there is no need to go 2pac for etch. You want to go 2pac for everything else though - just to dave any issues when it comes to lay down the paint.
Good luck with it. Remember prep is the key. You dont want a few shortcuts to let down the finished result.

Re: 2 pac paint questions!
1. If the metal had or has rust on it then yes you should treat the metal with a metal conditioner to remove any rust that may be still there.familybus wrote:ok the Mav will be ready to paint by next Monday if all goes well and its gettin done in 2 pac

2.No etch is required under the bog but the prep is different depending on which bog your using. If your using a fibre bog then the metal needs to be scuffed with 40 grit on a sander (not orbital as you want it rough).
If your using a body filler then it needs to be sanded with 40 to 60 grit with an orbital or with 80 grit without an orbital. If you don't scuff up the metal to what it says on the side of the tin it wont stick.
If your using a fine filler then this can go over bog or paint that's finished off with up to p240 but CANT go over bare metal at all. Make sure you have a clean panel prior to putting bog down and make sure there is no smear makes (residue) from wax & grease remover on the panel or the bog wont stick.
3. There's no real special etch that's required to go under the primer but I've always used 2 pack epoxy etches under everything as it's required for all warranty work. If I was doing a back yard job then single pack etch is fine.
It's very important that you read all the directions on all your bogs and paints as every paint manufacturer is different. When you get your paint ask for all the technical data sheets as this will answer all your questions along with telling you what gun set up is required and what viscosity the paint needs to be painted at. Also don't mix paint brands as sometimes paints can curdle or delaminate in 6 months time.
Cheers mick.
