Reconditioned Gear box for 4.2td Patrol

Post by Dodger »

Hi all my 4.2td patrol gearbox is making a growling noise when revs are below 1000rpm and has been doing so for around 100k.
The vehicle has done well over 200k now.
As it is the model that has the suspicious 5th gear I have thought that I should at some stage opt for a reconditioned box.
Now to the nitty gritty....
Where in NSW can one possibly either get an exchange box (preferred) or get ones own box reconditioned?

5th Gear was only an issue in the 3.0L patrol. I would suggest that the issue is the springs in your clutch plate. When they go they sound like the input bearing has failed.

Thats incorrect early 4.2 model GU's had weaker gearboxes' i.e. 5th gear failing if its the 5th gear and you have been towing you have done well to get 200k's.

Im from vic, but best bet would be to shop around some wreckers and get a late model gu box or also check out ebay the cost of refrubed one will be over 3k and sometimes you can find a low k gu box from 500 onwards..

hope that helps.

Yep x 2 ....5th gear on the newer boxes have a longer spline area on the shaft to give more strength.

Hey Weeman, eventually will be looking for a top quality GU 5 speed for a build for myself, what are the low K boxes going for and what sort of dollars to get to Auckland?
(unfortunately there are no late model manual GU's in NZ)

any help appreciated.

Hey Garth,

I think they vary from on outer-limits i have seen some from 500, I know the guys at hall4x4, i think they charge about 1650 from memory for a gu box but i can check and i could find out if they would ship to NZ.

I can speak to them about if for you.

A tell tail sign of a 5th gear failure is the oil going brown or rusty looking, and a rumble in 5th at speed when coasting.
if you have a noise at below 1000 rpm, I dont think 5th gear would cause this. It could just be a gear over run noise that most patrol gear boxes get. no real drama. if its not noisey on the road at higher revs and speeds I would be reluctant to be replacing a gear box, as you my find the reconditioned box to have the same noise.

cheers.

Thanks all for your advice.
At this stage 5th gear is still working without any noise or problems and at the last gearbox oil change 8k ago no metal or discoloration was noticeable in the oil and the magnetic bung was clean.
So as you have said it is probably the clutch springs and the usual Gu box growl.
:? Or at least I hope so.
