60 diifs in a hilux?
just started a new build, my old 88 surf, and thought i would get some informed opinions. it will be a truck used only for wheeling, maybe some comps, but mainly just a fun thing.
at the moment i am only doing the body/ barwork, suspension will be next, but will be a way off, so i am just doing my homework at the moment. dont want to do to much, so at this stage looking at a leaf spring setup. it will eventually get a 1UZ.
i have a set of new ARB lockers and 4.88 gears from the 40 that i didnt use, so i thought i might get a set of 60 series diffs to use them in.
is there any advantage using the bigger diffs, over the hilux ones?
i know i would have to move the fuel tank because of the offset pumpkin.
advantages/ disadvantages ?

Bigger, stronger centres,
Floating axles,
Bigger CVs (I think),
Bigger brakes,
Bigger drive shaft Uni's,
To name a few.
Obviously a track width increase as well and the ability to manage on larger rolling stock a lot better. I have lost count of how many times my HiLux rear diff spat axle bearings and flooded my rear brakes with diff oil.
As soon as I put the V8 in mine it started shitting Hi Lux axle bearings and it wasn't long before the diff centre was simply worn out from too much power to such a small diff.
Hi lux diffs and axles are pretty weak in comparison. So short of putting Patrol diffs in there I don't think there is an easier axle to swap in for stock strength gains.
The biggest issue is that the 60 rear diff has an offset centre (to the drivers side) so you may need to flip it to avoid the driveshaft contacting the fuel tank.

G'day mate,
This is the 100 series rear diff I cut and shut for my Lux. Basically cut the long side down to the same length as the short side, overall it ended up about 15mm wider than standard Lux diff. Gained full floater rear, discs and shitty criuser handbrake... ah well can't win em' all.

love your build Struth, i hadnt seen it before. great work.
i will probably go with the 60# diffs.
but i want to keep it a simple build so 90% sure, at this stage i will go with leaf springs, simple at the rear, will just have to flip the diif.
front will just be a sas conversion.
are the 60 diffs much wider? i thought they were about the same as lux?

They are identical width to Gen2 4 Runners so a bit wider than a Lux, or at least a Gen 1 Lux. I am not sure if Gen2 luxes have the same width as 4 Runners but I don't think so.
One thing is for sure, they are shiteloads tougher than Lux diffs.
