Winch motors

I recently picked up a highmount (Thanks Tonka) that has a few Mal Leslie mods- bracing, bolt to replace brake drum circlip etc.

It has the original 2.1 hp motor by the looks of it. Apparently they came with a 2.1 hp, (cant remember make?) then 2.5 and 4hp Bosch motors...

I know the motors are interchangeable/a bolt on.

Mal says going to a 6hp wont really make any difference in his opinion. Not looking for additional speed, but pulling power, ie hills/heavy mud.

Given its going on a 2200kg car, is it worth it? I know Mal's the guru and I respect his opinion, but really? 6hp has got to be better than 2.1

You would have to assume the 6hp would be more suited to a bigger/heavier 4wd.

Have you used the winch yet? Why not try it the way it is and if it doesn't suit look at upgrading then.

I have had both on my Highmount.

Heavy GQ Wagon.

Only time you notice the difference is under extreme load, ie dead car on the back.

I would run what it has until you need to change.

The difference between the old 2.5hp motor and a 6hp is night and day! We changed one last year and the difference is quite amazing.

I too am very puzzled at the ratings?
there is almost no published tech dat on warn motor ratings, generally only current draw and even this doesn't compute with there claims. If anyone knows some real data please tell us!
warn and many others seem to rate there motors on input power and this is sorta evident in the current useage of the later model motors eg 4.6 and 6hp but the correlation to actual output power is very vague. From all the research i have done the output torque/power shows very minimal differences between them (at given ranges) but they do show specific effeciency points where they seem to shine. From what i can remember an old 2.1hp warn motor could easily chew 350-380amps at near full load (full stall torque), which @ ~12v =350 x 12= 4200w =4.2kw= ~5.6hp. and the new 6hp's seem to chew upto 480amp = 7.66kw input power WOW. I would love to know what the superdutys can draw @ fst?

Do the 6hp warns simply make up the extra power with extra rpm?

There are rumours that piranha may have done some testing on the motors both the 7.8 and 6hp. Seems that if they did do it whatever info they know they are keeping close to home.

I recently bolted a 6hp onto my low mount and at the same time whacked in a set of genuine warn 115:1 planetary gear sets, last set in existance from what I could find... no load winch in speed is really fast, but i recently did a hard long winch up a hill and the loaded (swb zook on 34s) line speed was significantly slower, almost to the point where I almost consider throwing the 4.6 back on for comparison. I think the gearing put the motor under more load than normal hence the slower speed, still faster than what it originally was but not breaking any records.

This thread and that other thread lower comparing the 2.5 and 6hp is pretty much useless without hard tech like results from a dyno test or something similar.

Someone like MightyMouse should have the equipment?
