Orion Transfer Case - 40 series
Hi Guys,
just wanted to know if any has an Orion Transfer Case on their 40 series???
looking at getting one but have heard they need to be heavily modified for them to run well...
any feedback would be great...

I now have my Orion in..
Bolt in fitment, no modifications required. Only change I needed was a different transmission output shaft rear bearing.
Quieter than the stock case I removed.
No popping out of gear as has been reported on other forums.
The question is, is it worth the money to go half as slow? I think so..

i ended up going for the Marlin Crawler Toybox... had to wait but, it left the states last week and should be here this week sometime...
what size tyre you running???

Im running 31x10.5 Bridgestone ATs at the moment.. I have some 37s, 4.88s, ARBs and 60 axles to go in SOA on 55 springs sometime soon.
I werent aware that Marlin was producing the Toybox currently.. If I didnt have an LPG tank behind the rear diff, I would have considered this option too..

with the 31's on is 1st gear crawling??
i was thinking of SOA job not for more height really just to have really flat springs for flex....
with the 55 springs are you gettin 4 spring thats r the same like in the 40 ????
and do you have to cut weld or move the spring mounts???

With the 31s and 4.11s at 500rpm, I'm moving at 0.9165kph.
With the 37s and 4.88s at 500rpm, I'm moving at 0.9213kph.
With my knobby 35s and 4.88s at 500rpm, I'm moving at 0.8715kph.
Crawl ratio is around 80 with 4.11s and around 96 with the 4.88s..
If I put it in low first, it moves slow enough to get out and get a beer from the eski and get back in before its got away from me..
I can wheel rocky sections now that I needed to ride the clutch for with the stock case..
I'll use 55 fronts in the front, this moves the diff forwards and the springs have a centred pin.. The 55 rears are longer than the fronts and also have a centred pin, this moves the rear axle rearward.. The front frame mounts stay the same. The forward rear mounts stay the same.. The rear rear mounts will be flipped or a custom piece with two eyes will be installed to suit the SUA springs I have now and the SOA ones for technical trips.. I will redrill the rear axle spring perches to move the axle forwards to clear my LPG tank.

this sounds promising because the reason i need either an orion or a marlin is because with my 37's, stock 1piece transfer and 4.11 i had NO low range!!
are you running a 4-speed tranny or 5???
what about having it in say 3rd or 4th gear low range... is it "fast" to tackle mud/bogholes???
i really like what your going to do with the 55 springs!!! put some pics up when the time comes...

Its not all that slow, but it suits my style of wheeling..
4 low and 1 high overlap a bit, but essentially the Orion gives me 3 speeds lower than high 1st..
I don't do bog holes, but I'd imagine you'd want at least 3rd or 4th in low range. 1st and 2nd would be too slow to clear the tyres..
I have a 4 speed H41.. Orion is not available for H55F AFAIK..
The 55 spring conversion is a pretty common swap, I wouldn't be surprised if theres info out here already, i know there is on ih8mud.com..
If I had more room and money I would've went with a Toybox with 4.7s and split case.. That gives high range, low range 2:1, lower range 4.7:1 and double low 9.4:1.. Crawl with that and 4.88s is something like 225:1 which is more I'd ever need.. It would be nice to still have the 2:1 for cruising the fire trails and 4.7 for obstacles, but I guess ya cant have everything..

i dont really want to touch the diff gears coz my 40 is really good on the highway!! i need to be doing about 100km to keep 4th gear on 2600rpm at like that its still responsive if i have to overtake or wateva...
so that wont be touched by the Marlin Crawler... and like you said ill have the 2:1 and then the 4.7 and the double low that will cover any off-road terrain... cant wait to crawl over something...

So with 4.11s and 4.7 'doubler' you'll get around 190:1 in low low. Thats half as slow as me, which should work out pretty good..

Half as slow or half as fast? You'll do half my speed. You could get out, get the beer, drink it, tie your shoe laces and get back in before its gone too far..
