Heaviest you have towed? Plus any pointers?
Hi guys,
I just recently bought an 80 Series. Its a 1994 model Auto Petrol (4.5) with LPG. Drove it from Melb to Syd, and now Im in Canberra for work. Its great, but LPG is very slow going up hills.
Anyways, On the weekend I plan to tow the race car from Sydney to Wakefield Park. All up its about 2T (GTR Skyline plus Trailer).
My brakes seem pretty bad, its like they fade, and the rotors are warpped. Im hoping to replace that on Saturday as im sure I will need it to stop lol.
Also being an Auto should I be using an Trans Cooler? It looks like the 80 has one already, but not sure if that is Factory.
Also Is it ok to use LPG to tow or Just use Petrol? Sometimes I wonder if it can even tow that much weight!
Usually we use a 2wd Turbo Diesel Hilux (Current Shape) and it does it with ease!!

if its dual fuel no probs just tow with petrol up big hills as long as gas has been setup right it shouldnt freeze. Sounds like your lpg mixture is set for economy.
Mine is dual fuel and i have set the gas the same way almost twice the power on petrol but you can get the gas tuned for more power my dads old ford 351 used to go just as good on gas as petrol.
As for brake fade you want new slotted rotors and pads as well as maybe a full brake fluid flush and bleed. (assuming your 80 is close to standard height) if that doesn't help maybe brake boosters on the way out.
Try to use the gears on the auto to help slow down and if 4 speed auto never put in 4th unless on flat. When coming up to a hill manually drop it back gears starting hill in third and dropping it down early to keep revs up.
My 80 when on gas performs best when revving between 2500 and 3000. Is useless below 2200
maybe a fluid change all round as well as its a bit of weight you want to tow over a long distance. Diffs transfer and auto is a really good start as these will heat up a lot

defo sort out the warped rotors, they are horrid when towing big loads.
if the auto starts chopping netween gears it will get hotter so as mentioned above lock it in if it is unsure what gear to be in.

Look into getting the auto flushed. They are a great box but do get very doughy on old fluid.
My 80 when it still had the petrol motor towed a gu patrol with ease, just cost more than the cost of a tilt tray in petrol

on petrol 30L +, on gas depends on your set up but could be 50L + per 100km.
better if you dont push it up hills.
petrols drink as much as you tell them too with your right foot when towing hard, so if you give your self an extra 30 min on a 3 hour drive you will save loads of fuel - but that defeats the purpose of having extra power for towing
I drive diesels now as I found my self going slower in the petrols to stop them drinking and defeated the pupose.
ive based my consumptions of petrol and gas commos and falcons. best figures i could get towing say 1.5T with the falcon would be a little under 20L petrol per 100, but if i made it do the speed limit the whole way then 35L per 100 was not unheard of. the commo on gas was a joke for fuel usage when towing hard.

weight
i have a straight gas turbo 1 fzfe i get 300km to 80liters of lpg towing a tri axel boat going close to 4200 kgs when loaded iknow it needs a bigger rig to tow this amount but no gear and low fuel tank is 3450 kgs so just gets it it has good brakes on the trailer
i have towed a 6000kg loaded boat for 3 km twice low range 30 kmh stoping is the problem even with trailer brakes at 3o kmh
you need a good trailer to tow 3000kg plus safely

lifted and locked 80 series landcrusier

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. You'd have a better chance of cracking 20l/100 towing with the petty than finding a turbo diesel cruiser that's actually worth the price people are asking.koffeeblack wrote:lol ., how much fuel do you think it will drink? Damn I should have saved up more for a Turbo Diesel :(. The main reason I got this thing was to tow.
2 tonne isn't alot of weight. the 80 series in good nick will pull and stop that with ease.
Personally I'd run it on petrol when towing. Better performance and less stress on the cooling system.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Cheers mate. Just hitch the car trailer/car on. Will report back tommorw. Ill have all the guys in it too so add another 400kg lololdmate wrote:I wouldn't feel too bad about it. We just recently come back from a 7k klm trip around the bottom of NSW and VIC in our 80. Run it on gas the whole way, pulling a 1.7t van.
Auto wise, all I did was drop it out of O/D when the hills were coming, the only place we really had trouble was the Blue Mountains.
We run it on gas all the time, not sure how the gas is set up, but no power difference between it and petrol. We logged our fuel every stop, and we were running on around $20-$22 per hundred.
We were sitting on 100-110klm/h nearly the whole way, only had to pull over twice to let traffic past as I hate holding up the traffic.
Personally, I love the gas for touring and everyday running, it's a pity you can't get it out west or up north, it would change my desires for what we are setting up for our round Aus trip.
Cheers

Well just got back.
On the way there, it was painful. We had me and 3 other guys, plus a set of wheels and tyres in the back, big jack, jack stands and ramps, and a big tool box at least 50kg.
The GTR on the back, with about 6 Jerry cans of fuel in it.
I hardly saw 110km, I can remember seeing it twice. I know exactly how many cars I over took, 2 were L platers and one was an ollld Bedford truck loaded.
Up hills were killer. Usually dropping down to L2 and dropping down to 60km. I ran it on Gas most of the way, it hardly made any difference on petrol.
On the way home, we had about 3 full jerry cans in the car, and one less bloke (He went with another friend) and that seemed to make a big difference. It happily sat on 110-120km, going uphill wasnt as bad, but on one particular hill it dropped to 60km.
Going there I was quite dissapointed with the towing, thinking why the feck did I buy petrrol?? Then on the way back that changed my mind a litte. Having said that going there is mostly uphill...The 2WD 3.0l Hilux TD we usually use tows it much easier and uses less fuel doing it. It will sit on 130km without an issue and going uphills it will stay on 110km.
Anyways, one thing I wanted to ask is why sometimes the trailer would swing left to right? On the way there it did it alot but not on the way back it hardly did. I think the difference is the car was more forward on the way back.

weight should be centred over trailer axles at all times might have been jumping round because of rough road / potholes. Also car on back should be strapped down pretty securely by axles and chassis if possible to stop car on back swaying as much when cornering. I know some blokes who tow 2.5t horse flots on 80's and have less uphill probs. All are petrol. Would recommend a better exhaust if you plan on towing all the time.
Its amazing what a good exhaust can do for a car. Extractors and a 2.5inch straight through should get it pulling like a champ.

Gas and petrol have different tunings. Different timing and spark plug gaps, so It can only ever run good on gas or petrol, not both.
Get it looked at by a gas specialist. A leak down test would be a good idea too.
It could just be that you're expecting too much from the gas system. There is always a power loss with mixer setups
