rav4s in the Sand-dunes?

Post by drifta »

hey,

just wondering what you guys thought of rav4's performance in the sand dunes? ive been driving suzukis for years and im curious about how a rav4 would go... they seem to have a pretty good power to weight ratio

and i know you probably couldnt mod them much.. or do crazy rock-crawling
found a 3door 1.6L efi vitara =) pm me for 4x4ing around perth

I believe the main limitation is a lack of low range. That would affect it on the softer sand, and make it a bit more harder on the transmission getting out of the softer stuff.

They also don't have terribly good ground clearance. I have a nice photo and memory of being held up on an inland track on fraiser island due to a rav4 that was stuck on a rutted track.

Power to weight is always an advantage, and get the tyre pressures right I'd say they would go alright. But i wouldn't hit the dunes without a second vehicle, or a shovel and some muscles/paitence.

I got dragged along to an Overlander forum meet at stockton a few years back.

Every car there was put to shame by the performance of an older model rav4.
It had power climbing dunes that left many other makes for dead. Still running stock engine and driveline.
