New Turbo Questions
I'm looking at getting a new turbo for the Hilux (2.4D) and not sure what to get specification wise. I'm looking at 2 different ones at the moment but as my experience in this area is lacking I'm not sure which one would be my best option. I would like the boost to come on fairly low in the rev range, say around 1500-2000rpm and be able to hold till about 3500-4000rpm. Any help would be great
here the specs on the 2 I'm looking at

BUT, journal bearings? You could use a larger ball bearing turbo and still get same early boost but far better turbo.
They are more expensive but worlds ahead in performance
I do a GT2554R for $1750 including oil and water lines. I also do a dump pipe to suit for $330.
uses the larger exhaust housing .64 and a much bigger compressor side .8. With the advantages of ball bearing, it'll still boost early but flows much more air.
I also have a few options for inlet flanges etc that may suit you better.

I would go a ball bearing turbo if it was within my budget but sadly I can't stretch it that far. So the second one would be better for boost earlier in the rev range. When would it start to boost roughly and what sort of rev range would it be working in rougly?

Honestly both are too big for that engine.
Your 2.4 at 10psi boost and 4000rpm only draws 17 lb/min of airflow. Even the smaller turbo you've got there will do about double that (~33 lb/min for a 60mm T28).
A garrett GT1548 will pump all the air you need and spool up way quicker than either of those will.
If you want to save some bucks, pick up a used T25. If you want the best performance try to find a GT1749V variable vane turbo. I'm not sure how common they are in Aus but virtually all 1.8-2.2L modern car diesels use them.

which seem similer to the 1st turbo I'm looking at, so maybe lean towrds that one?

I also have a selection of T25 and T28 parts and have yet to see a 56mm compressor or a 0.6 A/R compressor housing. The 98- W11 turbo avenir has a GT2554R with a 54mm compressor wheel. The rest are either 51-52mm T25 or 60mm T28 compressor wheels.

I've had two of those. They're the T25G, same turbine as the smaller T25 but a bigger trim compressor wheel (same 51.3mm OD, but bigger intake), bigger compressor A/R (0.8 vs 0.48) and bigger exhaust housing (0.64 vs 0.49).Matt_85Lux wrote:SR20, apparantly they also had the 0.8A/R compressor as well
For the 2.4, I'd suggest the small T25. Going bigger is just going to lose more and more low end boost.

The compressor A/R isn't important by itself, it's more used to identify which compressor wheel is inside.
I've got drawings for a CT20-T25 adapter plate somewhere.
