new navara dilema
The D40's have bugger all ground clearance a guy I know has smashed open is auto pan twice on some fairly tame fire trails. The front brakes wearing out quickly is pretty normal for many vehicles these days, look at all the Astra's, BMW's, Mercs etc they chew through rotors and pads but they stop very well. If you want to take your mates away forget about a D22, they only have enough legroom in the back for young kids! Personally I would think long and hard before buying any of the current utes having seen how many problems the current Hilux's are having.
after doing the Ute of the Year test in 07 I would never ever buy a D40. On road it was ok but a bit of a let down considering the potential. Offroad it was awful. it rattled, after a couple of days on the Oodnadatta track the back doors were difficult to open. It wouldn't engage 4wd when you wanted it too. Then we knocked the rear drain plug off the transfer case by flinging a rock up which driving out of Dalhousie. The other Navara with us as a support vehicle also had many problems with 4wd engagement and other reliability issues.
The D22 is a better truck i reckon out of the two but is smaller and has a smaller engine. Personally I'd be looking at the Mazda/Ford or the Triton

I have owned the new YD25 D22 Navara since March last year.
done about 25,000 Kms now with absolutely no problems.
I have towed my friends 3 ton boat on the back of it. Certainly didnt like it, but it did tow it up a steep hill with no issues.
Only issues i have with it are:
1. the ride is pretty firm and can be uncomfortable depending on how rough the road is.
2. Lacks majorly with torque when taking off from stand still or a hill. specially when towing. once its going though, it powers.
3. they didnt put keyless entry in it stupidly.
apart from that, they are a fantastic truck for the money.
fuel consuption is fantastic for its size also. constatly get 700kms /tank city driving.

y dad owns a d40 auto petrol (380-410k's out of a tank,yes very bad on fuel)but we cannot fault the power that cums out of the v6 it keeps up with our xr6 turbo. and he only dus minor rock crawling in the d40 hes just a beach sorta person and he loves the d40 cus of the comfort its so smooth on the beach and it has never been stuck but we hav a 2'' lift n 31's on 17'' mags.our mate has a diesel d40 n we went 2 the beach with him n his is so hard to drive on the beach you hav 2 rev the diesel so hard cus the turbo doesnt boost until high rpm n h just spnt $1500 on a new injectors nd new back springs.it all cums dow 2 personal choice if u want comfort and big interir space go the d40 but if u want a solid all rounder with less comfort,electrics,reliable and better engine i would go the d22.d22 wins hands down i rekon, but i have never owned 1 only driven 1.

yes we own a d40, its a much bigger car then the d22, kick ass inside compared to as in has room in the back seats were the d22 is awful, power os better aswell, but as ppl have stated we have gone through 2sets of brake pads there shocling on pads, have a poor turning circle and turebo is bit laggy when in 2wd, do the d40 is more suited to the road sits lower aswell, and yes its a auto turbo diesel nd round town it drinks fuel, on hwy can go all day, as for towing i think it tows really good, havent hd a issue

I am perhaps a little bias but I prefer the D40. Looks, power, & space.
The brakes I have read are an issue but as the D40 is essentialy a Renault and most drivers of european cars will tell you that they have a similar problem with the rotors wearing out. They have a different compound in the rotors to give better braking. The rotors will wear with the brakes and unfortunatly are often not able to be machined. I am yet to price a set of rotors but I can imagine they will be cheap. I have had a D22 for a work ute and put it through some pretty wild country at times and it did the job nicely. I had the 2.5lt diesel and found that the 5 speed gearbox wasn't as well matched to the engine as the 6 speed. I hope this helps but it is hard to compare the two as the D22 as mentioned is a little more rugged and will most likely be better in the long run if intending on doing a lot of 4wding but if you are as you say mainly beach driving and you want the added safety features that the D40 has to offer than it is a better choice.

Yom. If you care to look into things alittle further before you reply to a thread it may not hurt to do a little research first. Nissan and Renault have been affilated for a number of years and you have in your haste mistaken my comment as an insult to Nissan. Renault make extremely good Diesel engines and by no way am I bagging out the D40. The 2.5lt engine is a Renault diesel and if you care to look into a few comments floating around there has been talk for a while about the new v6 diesel for the Patrol is also earmarked to be a Renault engine. So next time perhaps you should refrain from your brain farts and listen to comments and add constructive critisim to this forum.
