Rear 9.5" diff + 5.29 r&p

Post by tribolas »

Don't know if someone done it already but today we put a set of 5.29 r&p rear gears from the 9" diff into a 9.5" diff and they FIT.
There is an issue with the spline diameter in the back of the pinion , it is smaller in the pinion for the 9" diff , and I had no flange from a 9" diff to check if it fits. I guess there will be no problem.
But I will get one and check it for a 100% compatibility.

Alright you beat me to it glad to hear it works. What about the bolt holes any machining need to be done? Let us know how the flange goes on.

Yes,there is a difference in the diameter of the bolt holes. Sleeves can solve this easily. No problem.

I tasted today and the flange fits just fine. No problem at all.

So if I am reading this correctly..

A mitsubishi 9inch centre fits and and bolts up to the 9.5 inch housing, is it possible to swap the side gears to fit the larger diameter axles ? (if not I dont see the point you might was well swap in the whole "smaller" diff )

No , mitsubishi 9" centre DONOT fit to the 9.5" housing.
But you can transplant the ring and pinion gears from a 9" to a 9.5" diff.
As you know 5.29 r&p gears are available ONLY for the 9" diff and NOT for the 9.5" diff.
This way you can have a big 9.5" diff WITH the 5.29 gears.

love mud - from what I can gather the only point to doing this swap would be to get the big axles. Otherwise as you say, you'd just swap the whole diff so you get a little more ground clearance.

gotcha .. thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me.

So if I was to put some 35's and lockers in my NL .. I could order up some 5.29's to install at the same time into my exitsing centres .

It still doesn't address the 8" high pinion front = no 5.29.

Just to remind you , it is 8" LP 5.29 front diff , 9,5" 5.29 rear diff , manual lockers in front and rear , superselect , manual hubs , 37"wheels , BTV 7" lift kit in front ,V46 rear axle and suspension ...

Here's how the truck looks now...
