Safari Turbo + ARB battery tray problem - GQ TD42
Safari Turbo + ARB battery tray problem - GQ TD42
Hi All, I have a TD42 GQ patrol with ARB dual battery tray on the passenger wheel arch, I have just fitted a Safari turbo kit and have now found that the 'U' shaped duct that goes from the main filter on top of the motor to the turbo inlet is hard up against the battery tray. So I cut the fold off the tray giving about 10-15mm extra clearance... Still hard up against the duct. I'm now thinking the only option to keep the battery tray may be to change to a GU airbox. Is anyone else running this setup and know any other ways around this problem?
I have the same setup as yourself and ARB trimmed the battery tray when they installed the turbo........but I found that it still fouled and if left the way they had done it the tube would have rubbed through.
I just attacked mine with the air hacksaw and cut off enough to give the tray and tube about an inch of clearance.......I then put a strip of car door jam rubber on the exposed lip to ensure there was no metal on plastic action.
ARB battery tray and Safari turbo kit don't work well together even though both are ARB products.......Quality control issues is my thought.

Yeah I think mine must be even worse than yours because even if I cut away the tray more the hose will still hit the battery.
Thats funny what you say about ARB just putting it in like that - I was going to call them to see what their thoughts were but I'll probably get the "they fitt fine you should have let us fit it" line.
It's not a great battery tray, might chuck it and make another one that brings the battery right next to the overflow rather than the big gap...

I think the ARB trays are just poorly designed to start off with. Built tough, but not designed to suit the vehicle.
I (and many others) have used the GU ZD30 airbox, and have moved the battery tray back a bit to accomodate this. If you have a look at my build thread (in the sig) you'll get what i mean.
You can't replace/modify the intake piping to work around the tray at all?

Hey thanks Coxy321, lots of great info in your buildup, I will follow it in future with interest. I could change the duct to a smaller diameter and more complex bends, but my worry is that it will still be close and will probably still contact with engine rock.
I think I will just get a ZD30 / TD42T airbox and move the battery tray. I liked keeping the twin airfilter setup but it's gonna be too much trouble / compromise to make it work. The price of the airboxes means it probably won't be happening in a hurry
