toyota 60 series transfer case question

helping a freind with his hj60 seems to be leaking from transfer case breather , loses a bit of oil from box to transfer , its very slow he said last top up of oil 2 years ago never has dripped on his driveway , the cost of overhauling the box is horrendous , apparently you can buy a system that equals out the oil between the too runs the oil back somehow ??? any help appreciate

its ridiculously uncomplicated. I think donkyatt 4x4 have them as a kit, but its just 2 new filler bolts, one for the transfer and one for the gearbox that have a tapped thread and a 90deg brass barb fitting with a bit of heater hose or oil resistant pipe joining them. As its 80w90 in both boxes doesnt matter that they mix.

Heres a pic of one installed on my 40....Ryano at Fourbys installed it when the 40 was down there for some work....from memory was approx $60. Not sure who/where he got it from.

i am doing the gearbox/transfer on my cruiser at the moment, is it best i go and pick up one of these hoses from dons, are they a good thing to put on

honestly i am against these bypass hoses run an pipe from the breather to the engine bay transfer and gearbox so long as the pipe never gets blocked you wont have any issues. the main reason that i dont like them is what happens when you go up that steep hill at 45d half the gearbox oil runs to the transfer and it aint going to even out because the gearbox filler is always higher. ps they may save seals but ive rebuilt gearboxes at work due to the oil being to low in the gearbox but the transfer was ok :roll:

the oil does not run to the transfer once the transfer fills to the same higher level of the gearbox
also the pipe is connected from filler plug to filler plug and on my box the filler is in the middle of the box so it does not really matter the incline

the best thing to do is fit the bypass hose then monitor your gear box oil levels till they stop dropping (when the transfer is over filled and up to the same physical level as the gearbox)
then every thing is full to the same level so you should have no problems

Usually gearbox output shaft seal failure.

So if the level in the TC is physically lower than that in the GB, then how does it continue to transfer uphill?
