8" or 10" wide rims?
am prob going to get a new set of steelies in 15 inch. Currently have 8" wide alloys and was looking at getting the 10" wide steelies. Running 35x12.5 MTZs.
any thoughts on if i will be rolling beads off, more punctures etc either way i go?

Man your never gonna get a straight answer but the short version is everyone with 8'' wide will tell you 10'' wide, your tyres will fall off the wheel, And everyone with 10'' wide wheels will say they've never had a problem and it will allow you to have more offset or mount wider tires.
i run 10'' wide with -44 offset or something like that and never had a problem!

I'm runnin 36x12.5's down to 11 psi on 8" rims no failure...yet. My brother inlaw is running 35x13.5's on 8" rims too. There are other threads about it and most people have said that with a 10 inch wide rim you are more likely to roll a tyre off. 10's look good but are more expensive, are illegal (even with the legal tyre sizes) and make it more obvious to the plod that you're running bigger tyres IMO.
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.
So can you think of an argument for 8" over 10" rims?chimpboy wrote:I can't think of a single really good argument in favour of the 10" rims over the 8" ones, unless you have the idea that you may want even wider tyres in the future. But there is no really good argument in favour of wider tyres either

They cost less and they are a perfect fit for the 35x12.5s?351ciofgrunt wrote:So can you think of an argument for 8" over 10" rims?chimpboy wrote:I can't think of a single really good argument in favour of the 10" rims over the 8" ones, unless you have the idea that you may want even wider tyres in the future. This is not legal advice.
Difference in price is neglible and whether or not it is a perfect fit is debateable.chimpboy wrote:They cost less and they are a perfect fit for the 35x12.5s?351ciofgrunt wrote:So can you think of an argument for 8" over 10" rims?chimpboy wrote:I can't think of a single really good argument in favour of the 10" rims over the 8" ones, unless you have the idea that you may want even wider tyres in the future. Just saying that so far I have not yet seen a good argument for 8" or 10"

I get what you mean. I've never had 10" rims, only 8", so I can only go on hearsay that 8" is a bit more dependable with a 12.5" wide tyre at low pressure. But I admit it's hearsay, I haven't done it myself. For me it's enough to make me err on the side of caution unless I had some other reason to want 10" rims.351ciofgrunt wrote:Just saying that so far I have not yet seen a good argument for 8" or 10"

Just telling me that 8" holds the bead better doesn't make me a believer.
What evidence do you have of this? Have you run both or are you just going on what your mate's mate told him? I'd like to know the back story.
Legal - doesn't concern me, everthing we do is illegal (lift, tyres etc etc) I mean the guys talking about 35x12.5 which are illegal, so what does the legality of the rim got to do with anything?
weight - neglible, small enough to be of no concern
cost - neglible, small enough to be of no concern

how does that help? if i could find anything in outers search i wouldnt have started this thread.SIM79 wrote:http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/search.php351ciofgrunt wrote: What evidence do you have of this?
i am in the same view as 351cuofgrunt and still havent found the info im after - maybe it is all personal preference??
surely there is a straight out fact saying ........size rim made specifically for ........ width tyre??
I've run 8" and 10" rims with tyre widths from 10.5-14.5 and the 8"rims where far better suited.
most 12.5 wide tyres ask for a 10" rim(written on sidewall) but for what you want to put the tyres through i'd go 8" rims. If in dout google it
10" rims are pure wank factor but they look good
JMO but i've been there done that

I run 15x8s and have never had any issues offroad, everytime someone rocks up with 15x10s on muddy forum trip, 9 times out of 10 they always end up loosing a bead even though they are running a higher pressure than everyone with the 15x8s!
10s are better suited for road use with a 12.5 tyre and not offroad, 10s are great offroad if your running a tyre 13.5 to 15.5 inches wide.
3 tyres at once 15x10s, tyres were 18psi.

Nuf said!! that would have to be the only time Grimace will ever choose 8" over 10"GRIMACE wrote:8"
my own experience, 10" rim with 33x11.5, scrubbed more and had more trouble with leaking beads than 8" rim with 35x12.5 on the same truck, same suspension, similar pressures, same tracks and conditions.
When I had tyres fitted to the 10" rims, the tyre shop had trouble dumping enough air into the tyre to get the bead to seat, no trouble with the 8" rims
for tyre size/rim size info, check the tyre manufacturers website, they will give reccomended rim widths
this question comes up regularly, MOST will say 8" over 10" for all the reasons already mentioned
thanks for the info everyone... maybe im looking for 8" rims now...
any reccomendations on steel rims with massive offset , good value for money...??
was originally looking at 10" 'blade' -44 offset.
currently have MT classic lock alloys 8" wide, just looking at getting away from the alloys for a change.

8''
another for the 8" rims. from experience the 8's just held the bead better. mates always rolled tyres off the 10"s when we were driving and both went back to 8''s.
everyone drives different terrain etc, flat track and fast definately offset 10"s but mud and rocks etc with low pressure 8" for me. I have rolled the bead on 8"s as well but.

only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

-44 on 10 inch rim is the same offset as -19 on a 8 inch rim, both have 3.75 inches backspacing.rumpig89 wrote:

Keep the MT classic lock alloys they are -30 offset and are stronger and lighter than steel rims.

Is it?? I thought offset was from the centre of the rim and not dependent on rim width. I mean I understand the backspacing will be different but the same offset = same tyre position doesn't it?SIM79 wrote:-44 on 10 inch rim is the same offset as -19 on a 8 inch rim, both have 3.75 inches backspacing.rumpig89 wrote:

Correct, Same offset is the same central position of the tyre, therfore a wider rim will have more backspacing at the same offset.
I think he was saying that -44 on a 10" rim give you the same backspacing as an 8" rim running -19.
