hello all, im new to the world of 4x4.. my brother sorta gave me the bug.. im not in it atm.. im trying to decide what sort of 4x4 to buy.. any sugestions would be great.. :D
currently tossing up between a d22 nav, suzki or all this talk about v8s in hiluxs is reallllly interesting.. im one that loves a great v8.. i was in a slow process of building a holden 308 stroker, that sort of hualted for a while.. now looking at scraping and builting even bigger.. but the real question i have about that is.. why is it only hiluxs i hear about with holden v8 conversions?? , anyway.. seen a few pictures on here.. really great looking rigs out there.. i like ;] 2 thumbs up

there has been plenty bolted in patrols and cruisers in the past, but now days the ls1/2's are a lot more popular

Just that lux's are cheap and there are heaps around.

The V8 conversion is common in the other cars, but is more common in a hilux as they are usually slow and largely under powered...

Not sure bout the navara....

Depends weather you want a large heavy bodied 4WD (patroll/ cruiser) or a lighter / smaller lux but either way every thing is a choice and no answer is going to solve this as it is just a opinion thing...

And also depends on how much money you want to throw at it, hilux parts are cheap but patrolls/ 80 series cruisers (there are others) and pretty good from factory (coil springs) but often cost more to modify.

Just a idea.

and hilux's already have a solid diff in the front end unlike a navara that has independant front suspension and they are also more capable offroad than a navara and i think that they also have a bigger engine bay as well

both bays are around the same physical size but a nivara is more crampted... just what i find from working on them... so if you wanna fit stuff in the engine bay there is more room in the hilux...

for a fist time 4wd hilux or serra are the way to go as they are cheap, easy to work on easy to mod and only the minor not so important thing break..

ok so say hilux and seirras are cheap to modifiy and all that but what would be more reliable for long distant driving and some offroading along the way.. like an allrounder ?? :)

get a GQ.

coils all round, big and comfortable enough for touring, capable enough off road in standard form but throw a locker and some suspension at it and they will go most places. Use a winch where you can't go.

They are relatively cheap, you can put almost any engine setup in them with plenty of aftermarket support for conversion parts etc. Spares are dime a dozen and there are heaps of people who know plenty about them so advice is never far away.

You can have a capable off roader for 10k if you hunt long enough for the right truck. Don't buy the petrol, unless you plan on swapping the engine almost straight away.

V8's are awsome but thirsty so if you look out for a diesel or even better a Turbo Diesel they sound horn when on boost with a big straight through exhaust and are reliable aswell as economical.

What is your budget and how much do you want to spend on fuel every week.

Oh and a 5.0 stroked is plenty enough poke for offroad and touring use.

I sell accessories for 4wd's and have a soft spot for GQ's though. :oops:

they seriously do make good trucks to start with. A sierra is too small for touring and that would be my only other choice for a first 4wd toy.

If you were looking at new, I'd say a JK 4 door. It's just a shame the rubicon only comes in petrol. Still a good engine though.

If you can get hold of a diesel GQ and turbo it, or find one already turbo'd, you'll have enough power and they sound pretty sweet.

woh just had a look at some jks.. damn they nice.. deal but nice :) not quite looking at that price range yet.. im also sorta considering a tray.. iono my mind is everywhere atm ;)
