4.5l Cruiser blew lots of smoke :help

Post by rockape »

Was sitting on idle with aircon on for about 30min waiting for son at school today and when i went to drive off huge amounts of smoke was blowin out the pipe ( blue smoke ) and after about a minute driving it all came good.

at no stage did the car idle rough it was purring but i was shittin thinkin the worst.
I filled both tanks full of unleaded today if that means anything.

Has anyone experienced anything like this on a petrol 4.5ltr,car has 134,000ks on clock and also runs on gas.

I've had car for 2 weeks and previous owner ran gas all the time were as i've run fuel..

any info would help out heaps as i am stressed at the moment thinking that i purchased a dud

regards

Maybe the gas has dried out the valve guide seals and maybe running petrol all of a sudden has caused one to fail. This would produce alot of smoke but would be more likely at initial start up tho.

You may have excessive blow by. In that case, excessive crankcase vapours could be pooling (or condensing) oil in your intake manifold and when you drive off, in it goes.

You may have a blown head gasket, causing crankcase pressurisation and the same symptoms as blow by.

You may have a cracked head, whereby oil is finding it's way into one of the exhaust ports and pooling in the exhaust until you accelerate and burns out.

Hope any of that helps, but it sounds like it may be expensive for you mate.

Heya mate. The 4.5's are a bullet proof and reliable motor. Although In saying this the gas does tend to give the valves a hard time. Some/most of the 4.5's were known for needing the valve stem seals replaced at 150 - 200 000kms or maybe sooner if just used as an "around town" car. Meaning spent alot of time with the motor running in traffic and stopped at traffic lights etc...... If it runs fine / smooth once under load then dont stress it wont blow up just a bit of oil getting past the valve stem seals. Just keep an eye on how much oil its burning. When it starts burning lots, you may have to think about getting the head re-conditioned which is just part in parcel with running gas unfortunetly.....But until then just keep driving it and try to limit the amount of time it spends sitting idling.

Its common for the 4.5 to have leaky valve stem seals. Makes no difference if its on gas or petrol. And will usually only blow smoke on take off after idling for prelonged times. Or when decelerating down long hills. I wouldnt be to concerned. Its a huge job to replace them and it wont effect the life of the engine. If anything its prob a good thing when its on gas as it adds a little extra lube to the valve seats at the traffic lights.

I have had the same thing happen with our 80 series, was sitting ina drive thru at a take away shop and it smoked like crazy when taking off. Ours has about 300,000 klms on it with the last 30,000 being on gas. I've also got a valve lube system on it & thought it may have just sucked a heap of that in?

I'm running the upper cylinder lube drip feed on my gas setup on the 100 series 4.5L. Yes mine has leaky valve stem seals too. The upper cylinder lube I think has slowed the amount of oil leaking through the seals.

I've seen a few mechanics and they all said if it an't broke, don't fix. About $1500 to do the valve seals.

You shouldn't really be sitting there idle with the A/C on for 30mins.

oh, if u run a gas system that automatically lubes the valve's's. then it is really normal... it feeds oil into the cylinders while it is ideling. and when u rev it, it burns it off

That is good to hear it's sort of normal. Mine has only done twice I think in the last 6 months. still drives fine apart from that.... :)
