Guys I have a GQ Patrol that currently has a 4.2 petrol in it. Its TI model with Auto.
The engine is getting very tired and I need to either replace it or rebuild it.
I was thinking of may be throwing the Petrol and going a 4.2 Turbo diesel but will it go in and will it mate with the Auto transmission? Even thought about the 3.0 turbo disel out of a later model, again will it go in?
Or should I just go with a rebuilt 4.2 Petrol?
Or does any one have another suggestion, which can go in with out mods?

Well about $5000 to $6000, but Im not unrealistic about it either, i d rather pay for a good engine.BeNoS wrote:a good starting point is what is your budget?
are you chasing more power?
better fuel economy?
more torque?
how much time can you afford to have it all off the road.
I dont want the truck off the road to long may be a couple of weeks or so.
I dont want soemthing I have to do huge mods too, Im not ito that anymore If a diesel will go in with little or no issus Im liking that idea, however if I have to start getting mod plates and transmisson mod thingos made Id rather just get another 4.2 petrol
I was always under the impression it should pull laike anything, but this ones buggered.
More power will be a given the old engine has issues pulling a small trailer with a go kart in it, its shagged!
Im not real after more power or torque or a comp truck, just something that will easily pull my trailer, to the kart track, and comfrtably go for long journeys with out costing a me a weeks wages!
Before you go ripping it out and rebuilding it, how many Kms are on it and have you had the compression checked? Is it efi or carbie? These donks are good for up to 500,000 Ks. Mine's got 338,000 on it, I modded the carbie, put pertronics electronic ignition on it with an accel super coil and it livened right up. It can tow a car on a big car trailer on gas no worries now.

Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.

No I havent had a compression test done on it, i suppoes that would be a good start point.
well for that kind of time and money you would definately get a td42 in there running. wont pull like a train but will pull fairly well and be a heap cheaper to run than a tb42. you would almost get a td42t in there and running for that. the biggest issue with that conversion is swapping the wiring harness over.
that or a tb45 would be your best bet for the conversion side of things.
or if you really shop around a 4.8 but they still love a drink.
your other option really is to rebuild and like badmav said give the carby a good professional overhaul and throw a efi dizzy in it. extracters and exhuast and a snorkel if you havent got already. and it will go heaps better than what it does now.
