also where should i get it built?
i am in the trade so i can do all the fitting and that just basically after an auto.
spoke to the guys down at kewish auto and they sounded really good also seem to know what they are doing.
what sort of prices have guys paid do auto's up for there trucks?

I was talking to a guy who runs an gearbox shop and he said that the nissan auto can be made to handle 1000hp which is a bonus as it is a 4 speed which is ideal for comp work. Put a manuel valve body through it and something else which will reverse the gears stick making 1st 4th. I have his details if you want them so you can talk about mods in more detail.
The Turbo400 seems to be the pick for most guys.

i think i read in street machine that when they upgrade a t400 to suit high horsepower apps they remove the band that allows them to engine brake.
doesnt matter if you go an old 3 speed or a new 4 speed, third gear is probably always 1:1 and 4th would just be an overdrive. if you were dead-set keen on the overdrive gear, i would probably go the nissan box over a t700 if what ludacris says is true (they are strong) t700 are weak as piss.
t400 might be a better option, probably easy to adapt to the transfer which means engine to gearbox is no problem. also a lot of options for convertors and the like i would think, probably not so much with a nissan box.
i doubt a powerglide would be any good being only 2 gears, though i could be wrong.

T700's are non electronic and best option. Later ones became electronic partialy than fully and are the 4L60 etc but much the same box. Lower first than the 3 speeders and a higher top with lockup convertor as well. They can be built to handle more than enough. Run quality hydraulic fittings and a decent size quality cooler. Heat is the biggest killer in offroad applications.
I recommend Pro Automatics in Dandy.
can i use a mate to position while i screw?
hey guys will make some more calls today but have also the idea of the 4l80E thrown up.
how will the car drive with only the 3 speed turbo400? on the highway i think it be reving its head off. this trucks not a trailer queen will be driven to and from the bush.
have heard about the nissan autos but honestly i would prefer to adapt the transfer than the box. kewish was pushing the nissan auto big time.
anyone else with some experiences?? even prices or ballpark i dont want to kno exactly what ppl paid. even reccommend some shops ppl have used and have been happy with?
just want to do this once and do it right.

i still wouldnt go t700, waste of money imo, people lunch built ones with budget 304s all the time, jump on streetcommodores.com forum and see for yourself. the torque of a 383 will kill it no worries.
4870 might be okay, meant to be up there with t400 in strength, but dont know how much one will set you back. not sure what bolt pattern they would be either, they are from gen3 etc which are different to old small blocks i think?
what diff ratios you got, you should be okay with a non-overdrive gearbox (ie 1:1 top gear) and 4.1 or higher diffs. my mate had 253 with 4.6 diffs and 4 speed manual and yer it revd a bit but still made the trip from perth to albany way.

yeh would say i am leaing towards a turbo 400 after speaking to some boys who have them off here.
my truck runs 4.6 gears in the diff and 37's when heading to the bush. i dont mind putting up with some more revs for the sake of strength.
also priced up the 4l80 and its around $5500 for the box and then u need to add adaptor plate and coolers and all prob an $8000 dollar job once fitted.

If you listen to the rumours. Birdy, Hoon, Kriminal and Andrew Cassers cars where up towards 300kws. Pretty sure there all running or where running GU 4spd autos. Andrew tried the 5spd Auto, but I dont think it was a success.mikesmith wrote:how much power are the nissan boxes handling?? and how much are they to initially purchase and then building to suit horsepower?
i would like to put a box in and hope to have no dramas. but in saying that i dont want to spend say 7 8 grand getting a box into it.
This info may be old now. I see any of the people that used to say this stuff anymore.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....

Maverick. Unlocked on 35's MOTTO: Lock, Stomp & Hold on
Did a bit of research on the nissan auto after talking to a few gearbox builders in vic. The verdict I got was 5 speed can be built for 220kw at the wheels. The 4 speed can be built for 400kw at the wheels maybe a bit more.
Price wise $6000 for a 4 speed nissan gearbox manulised or $4000 if you provide the gearbox.
I gave up and fitted a manual to much cash that I did'nt have.
The t400 gearboxs go well, one less gear though than the nissan, they do seem to offer better engine breaking than the nissan box.

Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.
