Needing directions

Im in the middle of trying to figure out the best way to go with doing a rebuild on a hilux gearbox.

1. buy a rebuild kit priced at 350
2. do a Reco exchange for 650

do you guys think its worth the effort to do it myself or get it done by someone else and get warranty?

I think you might be better off getting the reco box.

I think that if you have to ask that question then perhaps your not confident enough doing the job yourself.

The advantage to doing your own work, apart from the dollar savings is that you know the job's been done right.

If it were me personally i'd rebuild the box myself. It's really a combination though of being cheap, and liking to work on my own cars.

i could do it but time could be a problem... if i was to do it then it would be wise if i bought another gearbox to put in while i rebuild my current one

also before you consider anything make sure you know how to take gearbox out and but in by either experience or someone else who has we attempted a gearbox swap in my mates vitara and it was off the road for at least a month also not much room if we were to do it again though it'd be a one day job

whats a gearbox cost? would it be cheaper to get a hire car if you need one a lot less work than putting in 2 gearbox's.

do you understand what reco(reconditioned/rebuilt) means??? it means it is basically brand new, and comes with a warranty, so if it stuffs up within that period its not your problem it is theirs.


back on topic, is that the price of hilux boxes??? Jesus.... i am in the same position with my landcruiser. box is 2500 to get a reconditioned exchange unit, and transfer is close to 2 at one place, whole job(inlcuding clutch and rear main seal) at a shop was going to cost me between 3500 and 4500. so much cheaper to do my self.


bought a second hand box for a couple hundred, i know it needs bearings and will do seals at the same time, aswell as raise the breather.

i would say if you have enough skill to read the workshop manual properly and the tools to do the job you should give it a go.

where did you go collins?? i am interested as my ute is sitting at home at the moment, waiting for me to save for the rebuild kits which are coming in at above 400 for gearbox and sub 400 for the transfer.

but i think for the experience of doing it and like oldmate said, you know the jobs been done right.
