Steering Delayed in 80 Series
Hey guys,
My steering is very light/delayed in my 80 series. I thought this was strange at first but have read that its 80 series nture to be a little delayed.
I have no discovered the delay is from the Panhard Rod. Most likley the bush? Is it just ok to get the bush replaced or should I get an aftermarket unit? The Truck is raised. Im not sure how much, but looks like two inches?
I took this pic thinking it could be the steering damper, but as you can see the panhard rod in the background (Full of grease) seems to be the culprit. When I got someone to move the steering wheel from side to side, you can the rod is loose around that nut.

that rod your talking about mate is the 'Drag link'
Your steering compents are as follows:
Steering box - The box that is connected to the rail that changes the rotary motion of the steering wheel into linear movement.
Pitman arm - the arm that comes out of the bottom of the steering box
Drag link - The arm that goes from pitman arm down to your left hand wheel. Its called a drag link because it 'drags' the left wheel left and right.
Plane arm or swivel arm - the arm that is connected to your wheels, these can be ontop or underneath the wheel end.
Tie rod - The arm that goes from left wheel to right wheel via the plane arms.
On the end of each rod there are things called 'rod ends' they can be screw ins like you have or fixed to the arm itself in the case of GQ draglinks. These are a ball and socket type araingement much like your shoulder joint and after time these wear out and your get a differential of movement between the ball and socket.
If they are all worn out (which on your car they sound like they are) you will get alot of 'freeplay' in your steering wheel. You will also find that the car may wander a bit.
Another couple of places you can get steering wheel freeplay is in the steering box between sector shaft and worm nut - this can be adjusted externally.
OR
In the uni/rag joints in the steering shaft that goes from steering wheel to steering box.

mate your best bet is to take it into pedders or some suspension place like that and get them to change all your rod ends, get a wheel alignment and maby a new steering dampener and it will drive like a new car!
Try and get a quote, if its alot go to a 4wd parts place and you can pick up tie rod end kits for your car and then get them to fit them.
Failing that and you want to give it a go for yourself, get the ends and have a shot.
Its not hard but there are alot of tricks you need to know to do it, and then you will still need a wheel alignment afterwards.

Pedders really isn't as bad a "A Current Affair" would like you to think. What they didn't tell you was the bloke from RACQ that made all the comments the vehicles were not that bad is not even a qualified mechanic, and it was not taken for a ROADWORTHY CERTIFICATE check, just a once over by RACQ (who do pre purchase inspections that are not worth the paper they are on). The Gold Coast Pedders store is a bit of an issue for Pedders main office, I believe there is some action that is going to take place soon.
What you have to ask yourself is: if you take a vehicle for a "SAFETY CHECK" and then something goes wrong, would you take it back to the place that did the check and go off your tits at them? probably. So Pedders pick on anything that could be and is a safely issue.
I recall on the first story ACA did seeing an oil covered power steering rack? and there was a busted CV boot. Sure, you can have them fixed next service, but these items will NOT pass a roadworthy.
Oh, I am in no way associated with Pedders either. I just hate ACA.

mate hi tech 4x4 in penrith are really good. When i brought car i went everywhere trying to find out what lift it had no one knew (i needed shocks had originals on a 5 inch lift. They were maxed out on the road).
Took it to hitech and they not only told me what lift i had but what brand ass well. Turns out its a toughdog kit but with dobinsons springs
