Seeings as I just bought an alloy roof rack for touring purposes. How do you blokes secure (with a padlock or locking system) your spare tyres to your roof rack?

I used ratchet straps only but if security is an issue one of those cable locks would do the trick.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

alloy rack.....spare tyre on it....touring.....not a good combo.
lwb 1.6efi,4sp auto,f&r airlockers,dual t/cases.custom coils.builder of ROAD LEGAL custom suzukis...and other stuff.

When I had the GQ, I just got a length of threaded rod from Bunnings, got the oxi out and bent it into a J shape which went around a bar on the roof rack, up through one of the wheel nut holes, thick rubber washer on top so as not th scratch the rim and then locked it down securely with a nut.

If yours is only a tyre though and not a rim, this method won't work.

as has been said already, on an alloy rack, not such a good idea. roof racks are only good for bulky, lightweight items. from your avatar it looks like you have a rear wheel carrier already? so you can stow one underneath in the factory position and one on the back? the underneath "emergency" spare doesn't need to match your other wheels/tyres - a 7.50/16 on a split rim makes an excellent "space saver" spare for most 4WDs - you can get tyres/tubes anywhere and you don't need a lot of skillz to change them.

hmmm this is something that I have to consider. I thought that roof racks could hold a tyre (and rim). But I suppose over long corrugations it possibly could be a bad idea.
