Work Involved in 1.0L to 1.3L Toyota 4k Swap
I'm currently considering swapping out the dead 1L and 4 speed in my zook for a 1.3L Toyota 4k and k40 box in good condition that I can get cheaply. Although I've found plenty of post's mentioning that this is a cheap and easy option there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of specific information out there (or I'm looking in the wrong spots). I've never done anything like this before (zook's actually my first car) but I'm willing to give it a go and learn along the way, so I'm just wondering what problems I'm likely to come up against doing this?
Potential problems after some quick measuring seem to be:
- Sump clearence: The 'humps' in the two sumps are at opposite ends and it would seem that the axle already comes pretty close to the stock sump. Is rotating the sump at all possible?
- Gearbox length: The long extension on the Toyota box makes it about 180mm longer. There doesn't seem to be much room to move the engine forwards so shortening the prop shaft to the transfer case seems to be the only option - I can see keeping the shortened shaft well balanced might be a problem.

My LWB has the 3k in it and the sump seems an issue The solution by whoever put it in seemed to be to bend the arm a little and live with the ding it still made in the sump
I now have 31's on it and am soon going to the 5k 1.5 because a) it's a bit of a slug b) it's piss easy to swap in the 5k

I have a 5K in mine and i would now go either a 1.3 Sierra engine or a 1.6 Vitara engine. mainly cause you will use Suzuki bits, the engines will be newer and the fitment will be a lot easier and neater.
My sump is self clearanced, ie the diff has bashed a dent so it all fits As to the jackshaft issues i now have a custom shaft that just isn't 100%.
Save your money a bit longer and get either the Sierra or vitara engine

Personally I would steer clear of the K series engines. They are getting quite old now and hard to find one in good nick. Altogether they were never a good engine and would not recommend wasting the money putting one in.
I would rather suggest the G16 vitara engines. They are a lot better engine to start with and have more potential with EFI and such.

Hmmm this is interesting, considering the number of people who I've seen suggest the swap is 'quick and simple'. Keep the reply's coming as the initial price of the 4k engine is significantly better than any Suzuki I've been able to find.
