i am looking at doing a swap in my patrol, Question using the l76 engine can AFM be setup to run with the engine swap running a patrol 5spd?

any help is appreciated

The VZ L76 has the hardware for AFM but not the smarts in the PCM or part of the loom in the car. The earlier VE's had the AFM hardware (lifters and valley cover) removed then added back in later with the VEII. To get the AFM working you would need a 2009 doner, CAN bus, PCM, BCM and a pretty good sparky.

The L76 can be tuned for ecconomy though and will beat a factory tuned L98 with AFM. (of course a aftermarket tuned L98 with AFM is better again) .

These engines are VERY good on fuel to begin with. My 408cube iron block stroker wth 500+rwhp was doing 11L/100k's on the highway and sub 20's around town. My caprice often did 9's on the highway with a custom tune (and bigger than factory cam)

i'd probably say no, they only come out in auto's if i'm correct.
But this is only an issue because of the amount of programming that's involved with the setup as the engines computer does a lot of talking to the auto in regards to when it's ok to engage the AFM system.

Are you gonna run the factory computer or aftermarket?

yes the hardware is there but not the wiring or program. The wiring and program could all be added into a VZ harness, Would just have to wire it the same as a chev.

However I spoke to a tuner about doing this and the problem we think may happen is that in a patrol with big tyres, heavy, etc, The engine may be constantly under too much load for the AFM to activate. In the commo it only operates under light cruise mode.

In my opinion not worth setting it all up just for it to not work.

Also the engine with AFM hardware has weaker rockers apparantly, which can make it much more costly if upgrading cams.

Holden claims that AFM brings the average fuel consumption down from 14 to 13L/100km........ :roll: :finger:

WHY ON BLOODY EARTH WOULD YOU EVEN BOTHER! FOR 1L/100KM ?? :lol:

You'd probably get more economy out of your truck if you put 5PSI more in the tyres haha :finger:

i wanted to run the standard computer, seems to be a shortage of these engines now though.

Very difficult to do due to the number of conditions that have to be met to allow AFM to engage. L76 has the AFM hardware. The E38 ECU has to be from an AFM vehicle, there are issues between early and late E38 ecu's, programs are not interchangeable.
I wonder what the engine looks like in 200 000 kls after a substantial amount of time using AFM, particularly long haul cars, do you rebuild 4 cyls?

afm engines have been wrecking lifters pretty often. and if putting a cam require changing of all lifters, valley plate, lifter holders.

l98's would prob be the best the for a transplant best heads and no changing of lifters if wanting to fit a cam.

L76 or L98 6 litres are GREAT!! Way more low and mid range power the 5.7's.

You can do a cam swap fine, have done before. Just would not activate the AFM with a cam swap. Don't know how it would cope with the additional sping pressure associated with bigger cams and more revs.
