this is happening on an old Fiat 615 tractor but i figure its just a diesel engine...

I think you're thinking right. I'm not familiar with that motor but if it's an inline pump, then the pump is lubricated/cooled by the engine oil. So there are multiple places it could leak into the oil system.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Can be caused by a number of things, leaking injector pump, leaking injector seals, poor piston ring seal etc.
Just make sure you change it oil regularly if you are still using it as this can cause a crankcase explosion, where the diesel and oil in the sump get agitated by the crank and the resulting vapor ignites.
I've seen holes in diesel blocks the size of dinner plates, holes blown in the tops of pistons and other lovely things from a crankcase explosion. Even if you have crankcase explosion doors in the crankcase (think safety valve) the damage is normally terminal.

Look to see where oil and fuel are next to each other. Lift pumps, injectors under the rocker cover and front seals in pumps are the main culprits.
